I've started to experience a drop in rpm and rough idling when standing still at a stop street/robot.

It almost feels like a dead HT lead (like the car is only running on 5 cylinders). If I put the car in N when this happens the engine dies. I can immediatly start the engine again and drive of as if nothing is wrong.

This has only happened when I drive around in a neigbourhood for an extended period, iow driving in 1st to 3rd gear for long periods.

If somebody can point me in the right direction I'll search for further advice on how to rectify it on the forum.

Thanks

Assuming it then runs pretty flat until restarted after which its fine again for a while, I'd go for the engine being in safe mode. My E240 ran like a bag of spanners once safe mode had kicked in - 0-30 in 20 secs type stuff.
A misfire is normally a subtle affair on the V6's as it's twin spark so you still get ignition, just weaker. I have had problems at idle with plug leads but that was more like a subtle knock that a complete misfire.
Ideally get the fault codes read, but chances are it's the MAF - it usually is.

misfire

hi,
i've had the same sort of symptom in the past, particularly on cold mornings. car would start but was very lumpy and would not accelerate, if you switched it off and immediately restarted car ran perfectly. mercedes of ayr could not find problem (mot maf) and nothing logged. their answer was unfortunately - live with it until became really serious! they thought it was probably a sensor but as there are so many the trial and error fixit would have been horrendously expensive. if left until car clicked over onto gas problem disappeared. unfortunately this probably doesn't help:( i've given up on mine - i get the 220 tomorrow:p

I thought about leaving it until it gets serious enough as I only do about 400miles's a month of which very little are town driving. Maybe I'll just clean the MAF sensor in the mean time.

Thanks

That will do no harm anyway, you could try un plugging it when it plays up to see what effect it has.

Won't the engine die if I unplug the MAF?

No it should not, it may feel a little rough but but if the problem goes you have the answer

I took the car to Merc to check out the error codes. They diagnosed that the CAT's are blocked and need to be replaced at a cost of R20,000 (£1300) which is not going to happen on a car that is only worth R90,000 (£6,000).

An Independent mechanic recommended an exhaust specialist that will be able to DeCAT both converters and that I won't have any issues afterwards. The exhaust guy's quote is R1,000 (£66) for both CATs.

Another exhaust specialist said that he will need to replace both CAT's with a sensor that notifies the ECU that the car still has Catalytic Converters and thus extend the life of the O2 sensors - Does anybody know about this?

Any advice or experience on this will be much appreciated.

BTW, No MOT in sunny SA

Bump previous post +...

Does the W210 E240 V6 2.4 have two sensors (up stream and lower stream) before and after the Catalytic Converter?
