Peplexed..... I've owned the 2005 220 D for 8 years. Over the last year, I've had intermittent starting problems when the key would turn and be met by a small click (not a louder click normally associated with the starter solenoid). This would only occur after the car had been used for a period, stopped, and started again after a short rest (e.g. visiting a supermarket). On the 4 or 5 occasions it has happened, the problem would resolve after about an hour. The batteries have been changed and the starter motor checked. The fuse box unit (driver's side of the engine bay) has also been out and cleaned, just in case moisture was seeping in.) All ideas and advice appreciated, folks.

Apologies, I'm going away for a few days (probably not risking the 211!) so may not be able to answer questions until next week. However, all other advice gratefuly received.

Update:
As neither my Indy nor I could come up with any other obvious diagnosis, bit the bullet and replaced the starter motor. Fingers crossed..........

So simple with a simple £5 voltmeter to know that the smaller wire on the motor gets 12 volt with the key turned to start, got 12 volt and its the starter, probably the internal points. One can argue over cleaning them, depends on the price.
