By your logic you should never start your car as it will be wearing it out.
No point in having it if you never start it. My complaint is that there's no need to have start/stop other than to fudge an emmisions test, it will wear the engine faster (irrespective if that's an issue or not and it certainly won't be an issue to the first (likely) PCP owner nor the second or likely third but eventually someone will foot the bill.

I suppose, ideally, it would have been better if some sort of 'valve lifter' technology had been built in allowing the rotation of the engine to cease other than on a compression stroke and any restart to be 'compression free' for the first rotation, or half a rotation.

I don't think I'll be buying one.

I'd be more concerned about the continuous starts when oil pressure is zero. Something like 90% of the west in an engine occurs in the first minute after starting.
Is that from cold? Wouldn't have thought that was an issue with a hot engine?

Without reading all posts and going by the question in the thread title I say it's a good thing. imagine how much pollution we are not putting in the air when engine is switched off. Multiply that by all the cars with stop start, it can't be bad. We are limiting the amount of emissions which we breath and our kids breath.

Totally agree with everything technical and commercial you said.
One might add that someone at the bottom of the chain will pay .. and through time this adverse factor will filter back up the “residual value” chain.
And then even the original probably PCP buyer will pay.

As this will take time .. for the market to reflect it.
In the interim Reduced residuals will no doubt clobber 2nd and or 3rd owners.
Opps thats folks like me.

In hindsight I should have bought my last new car ( with. SS ) , and meticulously switched it off.
And written off the bulk of the value in work.
Hence retiring with a pampered low mileage, known car, that has the benefits of alledged SS better wearing ( LOL ) technologies, that were never stressed by SS.

But then if I had hindsight .... I would have stayed in the flat in Hampstead ( with a driveway and a garage) and sold out last week as it was sold for £2.6M!

I messed up BIG style missing out on that !!
Dont ask what I sold it for in 1992! Tooo effing embarrasing. :(:(

I expect we have all been there, perhaps not in such a grand style. Me ? 1931 Morgan 3 wheeler sold in 1965, can't remember how much I sold it for but it was only a few hundred quid, four bedroom house sold around 1970 for £12,000, Breitling watch sold in late 70's £45.00. Oh lord, if only we had some foresight all of those years ago

I had an option to buy my first house when I was a lot younger, in the waited until I was 26!! Could have paid half the price.

That was a lot of money back then. In the Frozen waste lands of the North, my parents bought their 3 bed semi around the same time for £2300

everyone to their own . not for me , i am trying to avoid future car headaches ,not look for them!!! as is now its my opinion ,and when I pay, its mine that counts. the system is going to cause avoidable expence and inconvenience.

SWMBO has just got a very nice GLA 250 with stop start.

She normally drives it in economy mode so stop start is functioning unless she turns it off which she doesn't as she is happy with it. I am not happy about the extra wear and tear involved but she is convinced that it wouldn't be there if it broke things.

My thinking is that it was a way to get the C02 emissions down during testing so that VED and benefit in kind ratings for company car buyers were low. I can't see it making huge differences to the mpg in real use (low mileage user anyway so fuel not really an issue). I do think that it is going to trash the starter motor and starter ring gear quicker than normal.

Thought or experiences please
Start stop wouldn’t break anything, but batteries are very very expensive for a start stop car, my father had to replace a battery in his Land Rover and ended up having to go to a Land Rover stealer to get a battery at a cost of £380!!!!
