Hi all

I have just removed the last piece of the swirl flap linkage (the section with the worn ball joint socket on it).

Will replacing this part on its own resolve by flap linkage coming adrift by itself?

Can you buy the ball joint part on it's own?

I ended up buying a complete manifold for my E220 W210 £300+vat

I have spoken with a parts guy at Mertrux Derby who sent me a diagram.
the part looked like it was available with the motor assy but on closer inspection it wasn't.

If you can get the part please let us know.

according to this diagram

7

Part no 20 is the linkage,

EPC showed it as a6130940030 so I went to the inchape website, whacked that code in, it came up as "manifold linkage" or something along those lines, 10 pounds or so, so I ordered it.

I have been told it can only be replaced with the manifold off, but im going to do my best!

Hi Alex

I can't see your picture but mine looks like this

Defo different to mine, See diagram, but on mine essentialy it goes:

Motor ->metal bar -> Another metal bar -> Actual linkage. :)

Sorry for the poor visualisation as above :(

It seems as though your motor connects directly to the linkage?

What a shockingly poor piece of engineering. Drill through and use a nut and bolt to hold the ball-joint together.

I tried to use that , but didnt fancy drilling through the flat motor ball joint, as it points downards and seems to be riveted in place.

Didnt want to drill through the rivet :)

I've got a better idea.

Buy a 300TD and have none of these worries and poor reliability.

Alex

I saw a manifold off a 6 cylinder similar to the one on your car (i think)
the setup is similar to mine apart from your manifold is metal.

I must agree that it is a poor design for the cost involved in fixing.

I would like to know if it is possible to get the worn part replaced as I could refurb the old manifold and sell it on to re-coup some of my costs.

In that case its the other side of the linkage that I can't see in that pic. The worn joint on mine is defo on the motorside, although the linkage itslef has LOTS of vertical play so that may be the part to go next, if it does I'm not going to bother changing it.

The flaps have a noticable affect on low down torque and smoke output so they are favorable :)

You will only get smoke if the flaps are jammed closed. If jammed open, no issue there. Not sure about lowdown torque but others have said makes no difference if they are fully open all the time.

Out of curiosity, is there a benefit to MPG too [by fixing this linkage]?

Mine has smoke on heavy load but not pottering around so I wasn't really bothered about it.

I have defo noticed a difference with them connected. Having the flaps in the open or closed seems like a compromise on either end :)

logically we must realise the falps are there for a reason - increased combustion efficiency at low torque levels. therefore we can expect mpg at low torque to be reduced.

Just an update for everybody, replaced the dodgy linkage tonight.

The amount of force needed to click the ball joint in makes nearly impossible from above. Got it done with only a couple of scratches! Grr

Holy thread revival batman!

Alex, I know you no longer have this car, but did this solve the issue of the linkage coming adrift? I have the same issue and currently no replies...part seems inexpensive (for MB) so may just order it.

The linkage is a right pain from above, I got it on but keeps coming adrift.

It did!

To fit them, use Tongue-and-groove pliers from above, you can pop the ball joint together from above just about.

Isn't the current thinking if the swirl flaps break to plug the holes with bolts and then fit a resistor into the wiring to the inlet port motor to kid it that everything is still connected ?

You can do that too, althought that requires the manifold to be removed. If the manifold is clean and they are not causing issues, I would keep them connected, as they do increase torque and MPG.
