dont be daft, thats like asking why brit motorists drive on crxp roads AND pay road tax ,petrol tax and inssurnce tax.a calculation on average fuel burn ,avarage car ownership, average inssurance premium has been made and it JUST TAX ,period. what i would like to know is, when the driverless cars get going . who will be liable for the accidents , who will pay the premiums and how will the loss of petrol tax be made up.

OK so here are the 2015 UK consumption numbers in tons:

Petrogas: 12,082,000
Biogas: 631,000
Petrodiesel: 23,656,000
Biodiesel: 595,000

For a grand total of 12,713,000 tons petrol and 24,251,000 tons diesel.

Petrol has a specific gravity of 0.74 so 12,713kt of petrol = 17,180,000 cu m.
Diesel has a specific gravity of 0.84 so 24,251kt of diesel = 28,870,000 cu m.

Petrol consumption in litres = 17,180,000,000.
Diesel consumption in litres = 28,870,000,000.

For an average of 126,000,000 litres per day combined.

Fuel duty is set at £0.5795/ litre so the Treasury receives £73.1m per day from the British motorist. I remembered this at £50m/ day going back to the early noughties so close enough for government work.

(Btw the total fuel duty receipts are £26.7bn).

Right chaps, must dash.

But you already know all the answers...
- We're all in this together :)
- But "normal" people (those that politicians call "hard working people") are more"together" than some...

Hope you're not dashing in a diesel car, then!

10 year old diesel, no DPF. T-Charge Exempt.

They haven't thought this through properly.

There's an extremely interesting report on the Beeb where a reporter and his dad bet that the other's car was more harmful to the environment. It set a 23-years old VW petrol-fuelled old banger against a 2009 Skoda diesel. It really supports what PovertySpec said - no they certainly haven't thought this through properly.

- But they're still able to milk the motorist cash cow which results in the same view that most have about "safety" cameras.

The congestion charge in its original format and formula was intended to keep superfluous vehicles out of the city at peak times, it takes me about 90mins to get the 40 miles or so into the zone and the last 5miles are 50% of the travel time. This hasn’t changed much in the 12 or so years I’ve had to make the journey, sure there would be more road commuters without it, but was it a step forward?

12 yr old French 2.0lt diesel van, no DPF, white obviously! T charge exempt?

My 1997 Alfa Spider (4-pot/150bhp/ (Avatar) is under the T-Charge.
My 2004 V6 2/6 CLK is NOT subject to the T-Charge.
More astounding is my 2001 360 Modena is NOT subject to the T-Charge.

I have taken both the CLK and Alfa to London. Next time I'll take my Ferrari :p
What pile of old p**s the T-Charge is.

Another thing which is absolute bs:

Following the feedback, the Mayor has decided to proceed with the next phase of his plans. The ULEZ will start in central London on 8 April 2019 and operate within the central London Congestion Charging zone, 24/7 every day of the year. Some vehicles will need to meet tighter emissions standards than those which apply to the T-Charge or pay a daily emission charge to drive within the zone.

To extend the benefit of cleaner air further, the Mayor will consult on extending the ULEZ boundary up to the North and South Circular later this year.

So, all of sudden, if the latter gets implemented, my cost of living goes up £200 a month....

What I can't get my head around is how charging "polluters" reduces pollution. How is this levy used to remove pollutants from the air?

Ahh but you are not allowed to ask intelligent questions!

Plugged my reg into the T Charge and ULEZ Checker ... its exempt for both! :):)
Dont get me wrong I am delighted, well done MB.

OK I dont understand emission regs. (and actually dont care one iota).
Watched Top Gear test the new Porsche Cayman. It has good emissions ... but to achieve that they drove around at 25 mph. Driven like all Porkers will be, and the figures skyrocked!

To me its just knee jerk, political soundbites ..
How people fall for this crap is unbelieveable!
And this Mayor is the worst.

Did you see him sucking up to Pres. Macron, who subsequently hosted a show to entice Banks to move Corporate HQs to Paris! Hey he's the enemy!

But it seems nuts, that a 5.5L Car is OK, but a 2003 1.1L Nissan Micra would have to pay.
Surely that Micra would pollute London less?
And those filthy buses are exempt!!

I also think it is a grossly unfair tax on the poorer members of society ... its disgraceful.
(As I am exempt ... you can see I really feel for these people). And he's a Labour Mayor!
