I would expect more grip with wider tyres in both wet and dry conditions and i think the wider tyres look good but as Malcolm said they do cost more to buy and i would think are noisier than a narrower tyre although i don't know if this would be noticable. In snow a wider tyre is at a disadvantage so luckiy down south we dont get much of that.
Indeed the wider the tyre the noisier they are, re the grip, its all to do with the foot print, and some surfaces worse with wider tyres.
