Hose Clip.jpg This should help. It shows what you need to do, and the tool to do it with then becomes obvious - as mentioned above.

I have done it in the past by using a pair of mole grips and two small bolts, each bolt lying along the face of the returns on the part that needs squeezing. This way, you're squeezing the bolts themselves which in turn deforms the clip as required. Fiddly, but possible.

Cheers gents!

Managed to find an old pair of side snips which I almost threw away but ended up keeping, worked like a charm! Thank you very much for your help, have a good Saturday afternoon!

Don't think I've seen them... a bit OTT aren't they?
- If they tried really hard they could make the job harder!

I use them in my job too, I believe they're called lemon clips.

They're standard fit on the vacuum pipe I just replaced... Opening the old ones destroyed them unfortunately...

Hmm I'd better look around under the bonnet, then.
- Are they supposed to be better than clips with a screw and groove or bolt-through ?
- Or maybe just designed for a production line?

Cheaper for the production line in terms of cost per unit and fitting time but they also have a smoother inner section for clamping the hose more evenly. I've never had one leak but have had to adjust a fair few jubilee type clips to get a good seal especially on thinner walled hoses.

Lemon clips have "ears" on opposite sides, hence the shape/name :)

Ah, that makes sense.
The clips with the single clamp points always come in parts kits for my job so I've never needed to order them separately. When I was shown how to fit them I was told they were called lemon clips but couldn't see why.

less likely to cut into pipe. only real dissadvantage is on small pipes if not careful removing one can brake the fitting itself .that can be expensive .especially in restricted access areas, ie most modern large engined cars...there are some quite strong platic ratchet type clips about now that are re usable

They’re the Oetiker type, very popular on construction lines. Officially they are a one use clip as unlike the worm drive mechanisms of ‘Jubilee’ clips they wont loosen or vibrate loose. On the other hand they’re not adjustable of course!

They are on my E class fuel filter pipes , that's when I first came across them . I sourced a cheap pair of pliers from eBay to get them on again .

Be aware that some tie-wraps do not like UV and/or heat and can degrade surprisingly quickly. To be sure, I usually buy mine from an electrical wholesaler as theirs may be used outside.....and they are also less than half the price of those from a well known diy store!
