Excellent stuff , I was amazed by all the oil passageways in the housing . Even Mrs Wighty liked that picture :D .
Has the other mechanic stopped sobbing yet ?
You should see the valve body then.

I've just been told that Jake, the idiot responsible for this, will be coming to my place to assist with reinstalling the gearbox in the car. I'm quite looking forward to that! I'm hoping he'll bring cake. And a large slice of humble pie!!

I prefer bank transfer these days. Cheques are too expensive to pay in. The banks are trying to phase them out, but I fear we are moving way off topic here...

......

Could you even machine then before CNC millers were on the scene?
They always remind me of when you lift a paving slab & see where the worms have 'tunnelled' :D

Apologies for the OT stuff, I'm enjoying seeing the guts of something I never want to see from my car! How some engineer designs those fluid channels is amazing, I have a small appreciation of how a manual gearbox works (cogs meshing together) but an auto - not a clue!

Have a Google of Ravigneaux gearset. There are many online resources that explain it very well.

I have seen the innards of quite a few of the old Borg Warner transmissions, they looked very simple compared to this box though. Do you specialize just in these boxes, or everything MB? From looking at it stripped down, I think that you would need to serve an apprenticeship for a year or two, totally dedicated to them, before you could be considered "Competent".
As for the oil galleries,,,,,,just how was that done????? The mind boggles.........
Well Done Uncle Benz, this is a very informative post, Thanks for sharing.

The channels were cast in, then the casting was drilled for valves and pistons before being skimmed to make a perfectly flat mating surface.

nice write up/pics. auto boxes are not that much of a mystery, except perhaps ,these days, the electronics that run them , i always thought they were like a best kept secret . i have done a considerable number ,mostly earth moving machinery, in my experience the biggest drama is getting hold of or making the tooling that each manufacturer dream s up for dismantling them and getting hold of the tech specs for individual components so one can be sure of whats still serviceable. as for this case had the garage guy been a little more careful he would have "felt " when the pump dogs were engaged, but experience helps a lot. here brute force/ignorance has caused considerable extra drama/expense. doubt this guy will make the same mistake again !

I have even less of a clue. All I can think is that the channels operate values that then select the gear. The engineering behind this is mind blowing!!

Pretty much it.
In general old hydraulic logic boxes work by using oil pressure generated from various sources acting on pistons and springs to control actuation sequences of friction bands and wet clutch packs.
Older gearboxes usually have glow giagrams that indicate which circuits are active for which ratio.

I was thinking about this on the way to work today. How did the previous mechanic get the TC in, and bolted to the flexplate, and then the box bolted to the engine, without having the TC seated correctly?

It can look like it's in properly but not be in as the difference in height is quite small (around 8mm). The flex plate will tighten to absorb that.

He must have struggled to get the box to line back up, or forced it. When I've done them it's normally obvious something isn't right..

I suspect forced on the basis of " it's just stuck on a dowel, it'll be fine"...
Followed by "see... I told you it would go"...

He couldn't get the bellhousing to close on the engine, so got all the bolts started then dragged it on by tightening them progressively. I did ask if it was a struggle to fit. Jake was "off sick" today. I've put it back in by myself. Heavy blighter. Anyway, all works perfectly. :)

Aha, that makes sense! :)
