I've fitted the Towbar connected the multiplex by-pass relay to the towbar connector I now need to connect stop, tail & turn from vehicle loom to by-pass relay. Wires in loom are colour coded so presumably there is a wiring diagram which identifies these colour codes, any offers or advice appreciated.
Best regards,
Daz.

Hmm, 77 views but seems this subject is one where few dare to tread and I still haven't connected it I will try a few avenues today to be sure I know what I'm doing before rather than after so it's still open season.

Do a google search and choose images, a wiring diagram may pop up and then visit that page for more info.

Thats all I'd do. I have no direct experience of your issue. I've had a couple of quick looks but not turned up anything that looks relevant.
I will however be fitting a towbar to our S210 at some point so any info would be very useful!

Towbar Electrical connections

Fitting the towbar is the easy bit, you can do it with a hand tied behind your back and a new Witter Towbar was £99.00 free delivery. But the electrics are the scary bit with this multiplex system. If you make a mistake it's a visit to the dreaded diag and I never got away yet without parting with a 100 nicker. It's time something was done about this racket it should be free to diagnose the fault and a fixed charge to fix what ever it finds. They think a Merc owner is a bottomless money pit

In fact it might be worth setting up diag centres across the land at £5.00 a throw that might sort out the mighty Mercedes rip-off merchants some of the stuff you hear when you sit in a Mercedes dealer's waiting room is right out of the couldn't make it up encyclopedia. Touch wood my E class is running okay but it might be listening and working up another trip to the dealer so I'd better cool it. Best wishes Daz

I might be wrong, it's happened before...but doesn't the 210 have a connector already wired in for tow bar electrics?

Also, if you don't get replies just post "bump" it brings it to the top of the page again and is less likely to make people think ill of you.

Towbar Electrics

Hi Kiwi,
Thanks for that but I already have the Towsure stuff, in simple terms it begins and ends at the colour coded wires that power turn, stop and tail lights where the by-pass relay is to be connected. There's a flat 5 pin plug which connects to the tail light modules.

LH plug from rear l to r No1-gr/sw 2-sw/rt 3-sw/ws 4-br 5-gr/sw

RH plug from rear l to r No1-rt/gr 2-br 3-sw/gn 4-gr/rt/vi dots 5-vi/ws dots

Hence the need to be sure which wires are connected to the by-pass relay

Connect it wrong and it could be a £100+ Mercedes fine maybe even more as they search for something to ratchet up the invoice
Regards, Daz.

Surely the simple answer is to use a multi meter on the connectors to the light cluster.
Operate individual circuits and see which wire goes active. That wire then connects to the relevant wire on the relay.
The purpose of the relay is to sense the change of state of a given input and amplify it (with no impact) into the same change of state on the relevant trailer connection, at the same time isolating the vehicle from any malfunction on the trailer.

In other words when you turn on side lights the relay detects the change and uses it to operate the trailer tail light without adding any additional load on the original vehicle side light circuit.

Towbar Electrics

Hi Craiglxviii, In answer to you query I use Mertrux when I have to as there are not too many alternatives here in Derby I've tried independents but they always seem a bit flaky, half the story and not fully clued up. I could go on but I might get a rep for whingeing. Anyway when the lottery pays out I'll open a Merc dealership and get my servicing for free.

Hi Kiwi, thanks for that, but it was always a last resort, as I don't like messing with things I'm not sure about and electrics always seem like hocus pocus. My meter got caught in the rain and I was waiting for it to dry out to see if it still works okay.
Best wishes. Daz

Towbar Electrics

I still haven't quite worked up the bottle to connect my new towbar Merc E Class 2002 to Can bus wiring. I'm held back by uncertainty has anyone actually connected one via a TEB7AS by-pass relay.
I'm not sure what is meant by 'bump' it but if this 'bumps' it I might just get there. Tom:smile:
