Hi All

I have a 2005 SLK55 AMG. A lovely low mileage car that I've owned a couple of years now. This winter its developed a couple of very annoying problems with the COMAND system. They are the niggly type and so I will attempt to sort them myself...

1) Both the AUX and BASS buttons have stopped working on the COMAND unit. I have taken the unit completely apart and cleaned the contacts etc but alas no difference. Does anyone have any ideas?

2) About 50 percent of the time, the car has static interference coming from the speakers in the drivers door.. It starts as soon as the car is unlocked, even with the COMAND turned off. The car has logic 7 Harmon Kardon so wondering if its anything to do with that. Again any ideas would be most helpful!

Many thanks in advance!

More likely to be a dying amp.

Mine has that when not driven for a long time, once warmed up (amp) it goes away. I have isolated it to the amp on mine at least. It has the same volume level all the time, regardless of the setting on the head unit.

Hi, Did you solve your "static" problem? I've got the same problem with my w211 E Class. It started 3 days ago after I'd just had a new thermostat fitted and the garage washed the car as part of their service so I think that water may have "intruded" into the car. I've spoken to the garage and they say its unlikely but that it is possible.

Thanks Alfie. I'm taking the car to the MB specialist who has looked after my various cars and will mention the possibility of it being an amp problem. The volume control works well so I'm hoping its nothing too expensive to put right!

In our area, MB specialist Mastertech Automotive on Ellingham Industrial Estate (first entry on left after you turn into Ellingham, then down the bottom on the left), or for ICE stuff Enigma, A28 Tenterden road just after the tank roundabout, on the left just after that annoying pelican crossing before you get to the first entrance to Cobbs Wood.

Thank you very much for this info Chris. I've always used Class Cars and they've been very good. They will be looking at my car next week and I'd like to give them the opportunity to sort the problem out. I think you may have mentioned Mastertech in a different thread quite some time ago and I made a mental note to give them a try but for some reason I forgot about all about them (probably aged related). As I mentioned earlier, the static problem only started immediately after my car was washed. I switched the radio on, on the way back from Sandwich and the static/interference was there. It seems centred around the front passenger door speaker If Clas Cars can't get to the bottom of it I'll try the alternatives you mention above.

I used Class Cars some years ago for my s203, they were good but a bit of a hike (I'm 8 miles Tenterden side of Ashford) and IMHO Mastertech are better. I've used Enigma for a couple of things on the S203, plus a radio swop on my 968 cab and changing the Comand wheel shaft on the S204, they seem to know their stuff on ICE stuff - drop in and have a look at their showroom!

Thanks for the steer Chris. Decided to go over to Enigma yesterday but when I got in the car the static problem had disappeared and after a lengthy run to see if it recurred everything was fine! Checked it again this morning and its still OK so fingers crossed its sorted. I did nip round to Mastertech for a look around and it was pretty busy so I didn't bother them but I will take my car to them for future servicing etc. They're only 5 minutes from where I live.

Hi Botus, Thanks for your imput. The volume control is working fine from when the audio is turned on (i.e. amp presumably still "cold") and I'm leaning toward the problem being caused by water (from pressure washing) getting into the door and causing a bad earth as suggested above by Rifiki). I think this has dried up now resulting in the wiring no longer being damp. Obviously if the problem recurs I'll have to think again !!
