Perhaps customers who purchase the "budget" range are more willing to accept a squeek if it occurs hence the low returns rate? Have you done some figures per marque and returns rate? Now that would be inetresting to know if the higher value vehicle has a higher expectancy from the parts?

Could be the case!

Too much info to look at at 6pm on a Friday

Looking at just Mercs Eicher, has the lowest returns rate of all brands!, followed by Pagid, then ATE

To be honest the differences are so small, they don't really prove anything!

Have a good evening everybody!

As with most aftermarket products, there several qualities available, look at the recent thread about lower control arms that made the op esp light come on, Yes there are good alternative brakes available, but its the come back factor that puts me off (my brakes are squeeking etc).

Now i know it will not always be the case with aftermarket pads (i'd be foolish to think so) but as you said malc, you have had a set squeek (1 in 20= 5%), now if you multiply that figure by the ammount of pads we fit in a year and say 5% come back with a squeek, i'd hate to calculate how many times we would be doing the job twice.

I have used other aftermarket pads in my own cars, but will accept a certain amount of squeek etc (if it happens) but most customers will not and I fully understand that.

Not quite right, I had one that squealed for less than 100 miles and it went away, it was probably my fault and I did not grease it well enough as I was low on the stuff, It is well known in the trade that you do give pads a chance to bed in to the groves in the disc

But I would guarantee you that in that 100 miles, I would get a complaint about it!

i think the difference here is the fact that many of us on here do know quite well how cars work and what to expect, so yes we can tolerate a squeal for a few hundred miles until new pads bed in. the problem is most of the general public who are taking their car to a garage, have NO IDEA about cars so as soon as they hear a noise, they panic, think something is wrong because "it didnt do that BEFORE you worked on it" which is where working on cars as a business, you have to be a little more cautious, i think

Did not grease it well enough? Then why would it go away?
And fitting pads to slightly grooved discs is commonplace. Slightly grooved discs seldom cause squeal though

You obviously do not know what causes the squeal to ask that

Update

Well guess what?
I received an e mail from the said dealershiip.
They sent a questionnaire asking me what I think of their service.
I am away from home this weekend so I will give it deep and meaningful thought !!!
I wonder what tone to adopt ??

You won't need to think for that long Simon! The sad thing is they don't really care what you think anyway! I have to say after owning vw, Audi and BMW, MB has been the worst experience dealer satisfaction wise, I would be put off buying another now!

Standard procedure nowadays Simon and if you give them poor feedback they won't submit it, will keep calling you asking you to change your answer, but never actually admit they screwed up and haven't a clue how to keep customers happy.

If however you leave positive feedback they are more than happy to put up on the board that they have 99.999% customer satisfaction and you will never hear from them again.

Last time I was in my local MB reception area a few years ago I could not believe they scored a rating of over 90% satisfaction.

That could just as easily have been the rating from the girl who works behind the counter ;)

But if he gives some poor feedback, photocopy it and send a copy to HQ

I can't see as much detail as that (remember we have 350 product groups across up to 7 different brands!) but ill see what i can do!

Thats the exact issue

If it happened to be my local MB Dealer, Im 99% sure they would of done the nice thing, and given him a warranty replacement!
