Hey all, i have a 2009, C220 cdi sport with quite a significant issue going on.

This morning, i opened the car to go to work and i noticed the main beam light on. I immediately thought that I'd left the lights on over night, turns out i hadn't. Anyway, i turned the ignition and got, ESP inoperative, Run flat indicator inoperative. I also noticed that my indicators aren't working, or the hazards.

Turning the car over is fine but the fan kicks in full blast, turning off and the engine overruns for about a second. No messages on the dash either

I tried pulling the battery for a minute or so both it didn't resolve anything.

Any thoughts? Car was working perfectly yesterday.

Thanks in advance.

Not 100% sure on this but I don’t think the electrical issues and overrun are related?
Someone more knowledgeable might have had experience to say other wise and be along shortly though.
The second issue sounds like Dieselling

With all the warning lights and weird stuff happening with the headlamps I’d guess there is a problem with the wiring or ECU, maybe water damage.

Have you checked the voltage on the battery? Sometimes a very weak battery can do some weird things to the electronics.

As John mentioned, the engine could be overrunning from sucking fuel or oil from where it’s not meant to (turbo, leaky injectors, potentially HG etc)

I haven't checked the voltage of the battery yet. That's my next port of call. I don't believe the battery has ever been changed, certainly not since my ownership which is over 3 years now.

Just a another thing to add, mirrors wouldn't close on locking and the drivers side window opens 20mm when opening the door!

Might be worth seeing if you can swap for a good battery just to test if it’s the problem, just in case it isn’t.

Ok so I've tested the battery voltage. I'm getting 11.9 on the dash and 11.7 on the voltmeter. Seems too low. Possible cause?

Worth charging it overnight, if still no good then it needs to go on a star machine, a few years ago my BMW went crazy like that and it turned out to be a wheelspin relay. Sorry not much help. I hope you get to the bottom of it and its not too expensive to fix.

I have been through a vast amount of issues on my ML270, and the result was a poor battery. From my issues
A battery is good if over 12.7 volts when stood over night, it would be ok down to 12.5.
11.7 is almost a dead battery, perhaps a cell has died.
Did you check charging voltage ?, about 14.3 volts is good.

My old battery was dropping off to about 12 volts, and on first start up, some things did not work, drive a mile down the road, and stop and restart, all working again.

It was explained to me that if the car detects a low battery, it will shut things down to provide enough power to start, in my view, cars are too cleaver now !!!!!!

Guys, thanks for all the replies. I think I'm getting somewhere now. So i disconnected the battery on the negative side and had a brew. When i came back and connected it up, everything's back to normal! This is after I'd run the car in a fault state for about 5mins.

I'm wondering if the running with the fault before i disconnected the battery gave it just enough juice to start up with out fall after reconnection?

Finally I'm getting about 13.7v on idle.

As said at 8+yrs old I’d change the battery. Not had the same problem with a Merc but my 08 plate Focus started doing strange things with the electrical system, changed the battery and all was well

I change my batteries at 5 years regardless ,might seem excessive but as said these cars are too clever by half and need the juice!

As i have no data, my battery could potentially be original and 9 years old :/ It has mercedes benz varta written on it. Could be replacement from dealer but i have no idea.

Scratch that.......just looked online for Varta date code. It's printed on the Negative Terminal. 5208.....also know as December 2008! Battery's 9 and a half years old!

I’d change it they have a nasty habit of suddenly failing nowadays, disconnecting the earth and then reconnecting would indicate to me that the battery might suddenly fail to earth

Totally agree with changing it. As far as I'm concerned the car's unsafe for as long as there might be a chance something as important as my hazards and indicators don't work.

Given the age and standing voltage output of 11.7v, I'm 95% confident the battery is toast so I've got a new one on order.
