I've got a 2011 E class coupe, and on the side windows, particularly the drivers, there are vertical scratches, I've saw this on a few coupe's, i think it's something to do with being pillerless, I've never known it on any other car I've owned.
They don't seem to be deep because I can't feel them with my finger nail, so can't really tell if there inside or out, but they are annoying,
Any ideas. ?
Hope you can see them on this pic.

Looks like sand or grit has been stuck on the Windows rubber seal where it meets the top of the door

You could drop the glass and get a damp soapy microfibre cloth into the rubber seal to prevent it getting worse

Spot on Wighty, it’s sand or grit I had the same happen on mine.
I ended up replacing the glass.

Is it because there pillerless, because like I said I've loads of cars and never had this before.
Can you polish them out?
If not can you remember how much the glass was?

I bought a glass polishing kit that came with some liquid polish and buffer wheels you put on an electric drill. It didn`t take out the deepest but it was good enough. Take care though as the glass soon gets very hot, so go steady.

I get this with mine which is a 2016 S212, a damp cloth removes mine, they are not scratches or at least not on mine.

Wish it was that simple for mine, definitely won't come of with a damp cloth, I've tried Brasso, toothpaste, cutting polish, gonna try some jewellers rouge which has been suggested with a dremmel polishing pad.

I have the same .. but I think it’s down to scraping the ice off ..if it was grit etc n the window seals it’d be all the way down surely? Mine is a series of them about 2 inches long...

I don’t think it’s anything to do with being pillarless.
Doubt if they will polish out, I did try all sorts on mine to no avail.
I ended up making a claim on my windscreen insurance, £60 excess is all I had to pay for a brand new Mercedes stamped glass. If you go this route don’t let them supply you with anything other than the OM glass, the pattern glass will distort in no time at all leading to other issues, I told the insurance it was a vision issue when turning right.

Hmm, interesting, do you think I could get away with claiming for both front windows. :)

If it was ice scraping , wouldn't it be all a bit haphazard ? I don't scrape ice vertically and neatly

If you bourght the car when you joined in May , and the scratches weren't there during the summer , have you scraped ice off the side windows in a neat vertical action (in your ownership) ? If you haven't then I would think the cause is the rubber seal ? If you can answer that question you will at least know how not to cause it in the future , either by regular seal cleaning or not ice scraping (assuming you go on to get the glass replaced)
