help, this is driving us mad, e270 cdi w211 2003. at low speed especially when slowing down to appx 10mph 1200rpm, a small vibration felt plus noise which sounds distinctly like a back box, or heat shield vibrating against some thing, but guess what, nope nothing catching anywhere certainly on the back half of exhaust, vibration can slightly be felt on dash also, and more so when cold. its not there 100% of time but enough to spoil the ride of a Mercedes, has anyone else experienced this or have any ideas?? help much needed and appreciated. thanks guys.

would not have thought that drive line slowing down from 10mph. is it high miles, maybe soft engine mounts ?allowing something to touch ,vib a bit at 1200.

Blimey, where to start?
Warped brake disc,
tight, seized caliper slider,
worn suspension joint,

The choices are many. I would suggest first step is to get it up on a ramp to eliminate the possibles, or even find the cause.

thanks, don't think it any of those though, all joints been checked, just mot'd also, and brakes are fine, like you say will again have it on ramp.

Check the heat shields around the engine where the exhaust downpipe(s) are.

If you get it on a ramp give the exhaust a tap with a rubber mallet and listen for noises (engine off of course!)

thanks for info, it was the engine mounts, allowing the exhaust to resonate back through at certain low revs. we changed all 3, and now like new, world of difference and only an hours job. we found you don't have to remove filter box and cat as described, you can just reach up to the top bolt from underneath ok. a job worth doing for sure

Very common with that engine. Unfortunately, the new mounts don't last all that long. I've had 3 sets on mine in 14 years and 170000km and have given up. Noise just comes back after about 30000km. Mounts are still quite serviceable. I found the D/S one is the most common one to fail, due to engine torque. When it gets noisy again, just change that one.

Ian.
