Hi all i have a 2001 vito automatic, 2.2 litre diesel, The gearbox is dead and i have been told that i can not put a secondhand box in as there is some electrical unit that is not compatable and you must put new box or have the old one rebuilt, does this sound right or am i being spun a yarn.

Best Regards Mark

I agree,
i belive the ecu is built into the box as a hydro electric unit and on this model has very little outside influnce from other control units and few codings, so a second hand should function just fine.

just reading about your gearbox problem what you have to ask your self is how long am i keeping the v220 whats the cost of a second hand unit about a grand plus oil plus fitting what if its no good once fitted or has a problem the garage aint guna take it out for free and its not a small job on one of them with a fully rebuilt unit and torque converter you get a bill for about 2350 12 months warranty piece of mind as well i have my own indipendent mb specialist i know what i would do do it right the first time!

I suggest you visit this website:

And find a local outfit who can recon and refit yours, or do you a part-ex on a reconned unit.

By the way, if the person who said you needed a brand new gearbox is also the person who says yours is dead, I'd have a bit of a think. What is wrong with it?

As Parrot, we now know that the people in the link do a good job at a good price
