Hello.

I bought a 1994 E300D (OM606.910) a few weeks ago and have been driving it trouble free, until one day on the motorway (70 mph) the revs dropped and I started slowing down. I pulled over and the engine spluttered to a stop as if running out of fuel, despite having half a tank left. I started it up again after a few cranks and drove home slowly.

This happens time and time again, quite predictably, when going uphill or overtaking.

So far I've checked the tank strainer (not there) fuel filter and cleaned the fuel pre-filter, all to no avail.

Has anyone has any experience with this problem? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards

Bad fuel system O rings.
On the fuel shut off valve and/or the fuel pipes. Very common.

Can you see air bubbles in the fuel pipes? If they're old, they go darker and more opaque making visibility poor.

I've just cleaned all the schmutz off the clear pipes and there are indeed lots of bubbles in the pipes by the fuel filter. I'll look into changing those o-rings. Thanks.

Yes, fuel filters as well (inc. cleaning out the little 'witches hat one in the housing).
I'd do the pipes first if there's evidence the main filter has been changed (50K-ish interval).

Are you on diesel or veg?

Just got pinged, I thought I would thank you all for your help. In the end it was a vacuum build up in the fuel tank thanks to a clogged breather pipe - it ran perfectly with the fuel cap removed, I'll have to see about replacing/cleaning that pipe.
