Hi All,

I've just joined, having been an Alfa Romeo fan most of my car career, I've branched out and bought an old dog of a W124 with a view of restoring it and using it as a daily runner. It's a 1992 w124 E205D saloon.

My first question is, what other Diesel engines from Merc can I put in this model? It's the normally aspirated 2.5d which is fine but it's needing a rebuild and I'm considering just dropping it out and replacing it; with what I don't know.

I'm not bothered about pace i.e. I'm not trying to break the land speed record and would replace it with a healthy OM 602 but they are rare (in good condition) so I'm open to suggestion.

Thanks for any info in advance.

I'm no expert on diesel MBs but I would imagine an OM605 or 606 should fit?
The 606 in particular is a cracking engine and very reliable.
Someone will doubtless be along soon to confirm.....

Couldn't find any OM603s (the 6 cyl version of yours) when I was thinking about swapping out the engine in mine. In the end just had it repaired. If you are not interested in pace they are good engines. 300D manual gives 50+mpg at a steady 65mph. So maybe a 250D could do even more.

606 will fit but needs the injector pump from a 603 (no electronics) and I suspect to swap the current engine for a 605 it will probably also need the mechanical injector pump swapped from your current engine. if you can find the injector pumps from the turbocharged versions (probably best to search abroad for them) of your engine or the 6 cylinder OM603, then both the OM605 and OM606 were available as turbodiesels (you could have the pumps opened up but it would lead to slight overfuelling off boost)

What is wrong with your 250d engine? These are the most reliable engines Mercedes made , very little to go wrong. I have known these engines with 500,000 on them and still not using oil and giving 50mpg.

Brian, you seem to be asking your own question and answering it.

Thanks for your replies all, I think I'll likely go with the om606...there are a lot of them around.
