Hi all,

For a while now the electric aerial on my 1991 W124 200E Saloon has been stuck in the extended position and to be honest it hasn’t bothered me and I have just lived with it.

Every time the radio was turned on or off you could hear the electric motor trying to extend or retract the aerial respectively – again, I had no issue with this.

However, the motor is now running on for an extended period of time, as if it is getting jammed, and I only managed to stop the motor from running after a number of repeats of turning the radio on and then off. I have therefore taken the radio face off and will not be using again until resolved, for fear of running the battery down.

My question is this – is there a way, as the aerial is currently in the extended position, to keep the aerial connected to the radio in order to receive transmissions, but to cut the power to the electric aerial motor?

Does anyone know if I would have to disconnect a wire from the aerial motor, unplug a fuse etc to achieve this?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Many thanks,

dcs

If you look at the aerial motor there are the wires on a plug, also from the aerial is a thicker black cable which is the coax, if you just unplug the coloured wires from the aerial and leave the coax it should still get a signal to the radio.

Hi Mark,

Thanks for the prompt reply at the time.

Unfortunately i only just got around to having a look at this today due to recent holidays, work pressure etc - one month down the line!!

Your suggestion seems to have worked though, many thanks :)

Best wishes,

.... too many cars!
I reckon the aerial is siezed and the clutch is unable to push or pull the mast hence the clicking. Easily replaced though.
