Hi there

Wonder whether someone could help me - I have been having a real saga trying to get my beloved 500 SE (1988) back on the road.

About two months' ago - after years of absolutely perfect untroubled performance - the car stalled and refused to start up again; diagnosed as a faulty ignition amplifier (ECU) I hunted high and low for a second hand replacement, as a new one costs... £1,800 + VAT.

Anyway, I have come by a suitable unit - now the ignition turns over and the car wants to start.. indeed by turning off the ignition on full lock the car does turn over, and the engine kicks into life - although the tachometer (rev counter) does not move (unlike the oil pressure / fuel gauge) - suggesting all is not well.

As soon as I release the key from full lock, the engine immediately stops - meaning it is impossible to engage the gears or anything.

By the way, as the car's been immobile for a while I added £12 of petrol in case the tank had emptied.

Could anyone diagnose what could be wrong?

(One problem - one of the three screws on the distributor cap is rusted on so it is not possible to take it off and inpect the connections)

Thanks for any advice!
