well got home this evening and the wife says to me that her car is making a funny noise, asked her to explain but didn't really get anywhere there (women and cars ),
Anyway get in the car and drive up the road and it's making quite a noise that's speed related, it's like a whine from say an output shaft on the gearbox and gets louder as the speed increases. Checked the aft and that looks clean and 8 cm on the dipstick(after being stood for about 30 minutes). Got a video of the noise so will try getting it uploaded somewhere but in the meantime I'd like to hear thoughts on what else I can look for.

Sounds to me like a bearing gone somewhere, probably in the transmission as you suspect. It sounds too 'heavy' to be wheel bearing, although it could also be from the diff.

Actually, if you hadn't told me it was an A Class, I would have said it was a recording from an old Glasgow tram! For your sake I hope I'm wrong because a tranny job on one of these will be costly.

Thanks that's my suspicion too at the moment but I'm really hopeful I'm wrong, we had the reluctor rings and bearings done recently as they were badly corroded and throwing up odd errors occasionally, not had any problems since so wouldn't expect it to be that,

When I was driving it yesterday the noise was almost coming from the centre of the engine bay rather that on side but can be sure, really don't know if that will make any difference but we will see I guess.

Well the car went in yesterday and after a couple of hours it's the gearbox, their pretty sure it's one of the mail bearings that's failed so my options are,
Replacement box, even they said don't bother with this
Refurb the existing one,
Or fine a second hand one which may be fine or could die in a few months.

We decided to go for the refurb of the box at a eye watering £1800 including all the labour. Not a nice experience saying yes to that cost but the choice was repair or sell for spares or repair and put the money towards another car, since we know the rest of this car is now in good condition (recently did the brakes and springs all round) we thought it was better to stay with the devil you know.

The whine is called "power delivery" and apparently is a feature not a bug ;)

Stop it Craig! You're making me nervous

Sorry to hear you're facing a very expensive repair, Matt ...

I had the OSF bearings replaced in March, and a new starter motor just last week - including the new brake disks and pads all round, in 2015, it's about £1,300 so far in 26 months of ownership, not counting the new a/c condenser and radiator, which was paid for by the RAC Gold Warranty, shortly after I bought the car. Plus all new [wider] tyres, wheels refurb, waxoyl treatment, and all the little mods :)

Still, like you said - buying something new, even if I could afford it, will just introduce a bunch of new unknowns.

Very much so David, we've had this for just over 18 months and spent around £1600 getting things sorted that the previous owner had neglected, so with the work it now needs doing we will have spent more on repairs than we actually bought the car for :rolleyes: oh well, replacing the kitchen will be put off for a few more months

I do forget to mention that we are having the glow plugs replaced while its in, I was going to attempt doing it myself to save the 4hours labour but when I started taking things apart I thought better, they are a pita to replace by the looks of things and doing it by trial and error probably isn't the best way of doing it

They all whine! CVTs (and women). It's a fundamental physical law. Bit like the nuclear forces, or traffic lights turning to red when you're in a hurry. Nothing necessarily wrong with the box- it's just how they are.

Lol very true Craig, murphies law if it can go wrong it will do

Re the whine, all certainly do but if you listen to the video this was bad and getting worse, it had gone from a small whine to this in the space of a couple weeks so it was on its way to failing, hopefully once done we will have a happy car and wife again

Sure its not a CV joint on the drive shaft? I have had a couple make that kind of noise...bit of a common problem.
First thing they looked at Steve, although worn and had a little noise wasn't the main problem :(

Thought I'd do a final update on the thread, got the car back this morning and no more whine, it really was likea different car. Ended up being £1765 but it's like a new box now and a 2year garentee for the work so can't really complain.
