Hi,

My CD player has decided to pack up after having trouble reading CD's for the last couple of months.

I assume its cheaper to buy a new one which I am willing to do, but is there an upgraded model which will fit into the consol area ? and it is worth the extra money ?

Why not take off the top and clean the laser by hand, very carefully using a soft bud or cloth using very little pressure, you have nothing to lose

or use a air compressor and blow in a few gentle gusts of air, if it's a dust issue that should clear the dust out

Sorry Anyweb you cant use copmpressed air it will damage the suspension. often it is a film on the laser what needs wiping off, lighter fuel will not hurt anything

Hi Television,
I am interested in your comment.
I normally used compressed air to clean the lens as there is less chance of scratching. You can buy 'clean' compressed air from maplin that does the trick. (Cleary you keep it a relative distance away from lens ~10 - 20 cms)
Have you had the suspension fail?
Regards
Suki

I suppose that talking compressed is a bit wide open, and the type that you are using with that distance will not harm it. I have replaced 1000,s over the last 20 years. Often when used in a varying climate like in a car a film can build up and air will not take it away. All lasers are held by 3-4 springs and if stretched it cant read.
In this throw away world I wish that I had specialized in repairing the CDs fitted to our cars. What happens is that the output falls off a little and the focus goes out. In the internal menu you have a gain, focus and off set controls, using special CDs like I have with built in faults they can be re set to new.
When you insert a disc the laser is activated and it goes up and down 3 times during this process the disc is kick started to enable the laser to read the TOC (table of contents) it then knows what to do. When the laser is weak they ofen cant even kick start the disc and people assume it is the motor, under these conditions it comes up "no disc"

Television,
Thanks for the reply.
yes I too have came across people telling me that he motor has failed only to realise that the lens is dirty.
I am not sure what coating the lens has, but it is an AR coating of some sort (probably ~622 nm) but a bit of isopropanol should clean any dirt without damaging the coating if compressed air does not work.

I use alcohol buds and felts mainly as I have 100's of them
