They changed them under warranty, if the car was under warranty.

Its not the chains that are the issue, its the camshaft variation gears that jam and cause the chain to stretch, the chain is the consequential effect and what brings the EML light on. Its a common problem and a risk with all 271 engines.

Yip- I missed the first part, down to the customer is the car was out of warranty, don’t think any/many repairs were made out of warranty on ‘good will’

Personally I do like W203 over pre-face lift W204 any day. I have seen loads of W204 having problems with their rear lights. eg one set of break lights duller then the other side.

Have a look at W203 Sports Edition I had one which has man made leathers in all (apart from hatch back) lovely alloys wheels and they only come in Black or Sliver

Exactly what I have but in estate guise but with the lovely 642 engine under the bonnet. I looked at swapping mine for a 204 but i preferred the drive of the W203. That said, the later W204 with the 350 engine I would have. Thats a much better jump.

Hi,
Found out today the car I spotted previously was reduced to £2295 which seems very reasonable, they checked the history with the car and the timing chain has not been replaced so that looks like a non starter.
