Good Morning guys.

I have never had a major problem with my car. I have always kept it well maintained and now disappointed that my car will not start.

When you put the key in it makes the normal sounds like that zaaap when you insert it. then the white dash comes on. Not the Dash lights. like when it shows your airbags, engine management etc...

The steering unlocks when you put key in and locks when you take key out.

I can turn the key but the problem is it doesn't turn the ignition lights or wont start.

Once i called green flag they came put the computer no error codes other than "Fuel temperature sensor" but the green flag man told me thats because the fuel was on reserve levels.

But please could you help me

i have also tryed my spare key

my car is a w204, c220 diesel late 2007 early 2008.

really depressing cos i need my car not only for myself but my elderly 87yr old dad who depends on me and my 3 kids.

ive given the car to merc dealer stratford e15 recovered it to them but im so afraid about the costs and turn around time.

The steering lock looks to be OK but is it and just giving false information, these are failing at a very high rate, if it is not that then it is the EIS switch that has failed.

Hopefully it's no more!

Do you think I would have a leg to stand on if I ask merc to contribute because havin read on the forum it sounds like a common problem...

How long did merc take to sort it out for you aswell please

If you are going to ask for a contribution, good luck.

Despite a full service history, and proof that this is a common fault, MB were not interested in contributing to the repair.

The MB dealer did give me a discount (out of the goodness of his heart), but nothing officially from MB UK.

I agree - this is a common problem with some Mercs, and it is a fault that you do not expect with so-called 'quality' marques.

I have NEVER had a steering lock/EIS failure in any other car I have owned.

But I have also had the rear-light-cluster electrical problem with my W204 as well, and MB declined to pick the bill up for that, despite the fact that it is caused by a design fault!

The repair took about a week - mainly due to the fact that some sort of security key has to be shipped from Germany before the new unit can be programmed.

I think MB had the car for about a week.

Got an update today.

After not getting any phone calls from them i decided to go down to my local dealer by bus and wait for them to tell me whats wrong with the car.

Apparently its the Steering Lock? My steering lock locks and unlocks when i put the key in i explained he said sometimes it can get stuck and the module does not communicate with the EIS.

Part will cost £260 + vat. Dont know about labour yet will keep you posted.

Was promised a Loan car today but apparently the customer has not bought it back yet. what a joke Last Friday they had one available but it was not allowed to be given out because its a weekend and now today.

Just getting messed around with them to be honest!

How can you be sure it was unlocking, other than the noise?

For a steering lock that does unlock, replacement takes only an hour when one is familiar with them.
The last one we replaced came to £323.10 all in.

For a steering lock that does not unlock (they usually will if you fiddle them enough), it is a whole different matter!

Indeed, if you could rotate the wheel 180 degrees it is unlocked.

Next question - did it lock with key out?

That is a lot of labour charge for this repair...

That is not correct at all - they did not give you the truth.

We are independent specialists, and have no problems whatsoever ordering the steering lock and 'orange' key from Mercedes. Yes, we have to pay a surcharge for it, but that is always refunded without issue.
The 'orange key' is for coding the lock to the car btw.

I should add if it is not clear, the costs I mention above were for all genuine Mercedes parts, no fixed repaired or modified parts, just a new genuine Mercedes supplied replacement for the failed original.
I strongly suspect that a design flaw was noted (with many failing), and the new part is a modified design.

sorted.

they charged me £670 total. from 800 quid discount.

crap work to be honest.

steering wheel was bent not alined.

others light kept appearing esp, then airbag malfunction etc...

They didnt wash or clean the car as they normally do at other dealers.

Kept lieing about time oh 1hr it will be ready then 7 hours come back tomorrow... then 20 mins it will be done 5 hrs later it was still yet be done he hasnt logged off your job yet still working on it.

Plus they fobbed me off on the loan car. First they said the customer didnt bring it back on time so i waited 2 days then they said none available so i just went europcar to hire my own then they phone me saying another one came avalible lol.

Then they told me it will be ready Saturday morning so i returned the car to europcar on friday yup you guess it wasnt ready so again i had no car.

Then finally they had a car avaliable and they couldnt give me it.... i have Zero points but have had a 70day disq for sp30 5 years ago. so bullocks them went to hire another car again then car finally got done yestoday.

Good morning guys!

Lol only a month went by after Mercedes repaired the car. This morning the same thing happened so surely it could not have been wear and tear as claimed last time.

Anyways what do I do now? Do I take it back it to them or? Will I have to pay again?

All parts / labour should have a 12 month guarantee.

Any costs incurred by yourself as a direct result of poor workmanship/failed parts should be passed on to the dealer.

You know from recent experience they are going to take the P.

Record all phone calls to them and if there's any dispute any further contact with them should be in writing, sent recorded delivery.
