So I actually decided to not use cruise control and see how far I could get the fuel to stretch while driving from London - Nottingham the other day.

Obviously I wasn't cruising at my usual 80-90mph to get this figure.

52.5mpg was the best I reached (didn't get the photo though).

120,000Miles on the clock (around 90% motorway miles), 58 plate.

Still impressed with this thing for it's age, weight and being a V6 Diesel that could pull a train if it wanted to.

And before i'm shot down, yes I know the display isn't accurate, but it's still close enough.

I have a 1.3 petrol, seems that can also tow a train, a 82 ton road train !
The fuel economy absolutely sucks though...

That is impressive - the best I have ever managed was almost 50mpg on a long unhurried run on French Autoroutes.

However, I'm not so impressed by you taking a photo whilst driving at 46mph - that deserves a £200 fine and 6 points. For your sake, I hope there are no police watching this forum!

Our E320 V6 is currently returning 28mpg. I'm keen to see how it behaves after its service.

Bit of a reset on the go and not a great distance but it was on an E320cdi a few weeks ago after new air filters ...and with 200 kg of tools in the car . image.jpeg

Is this turning into another 'Anything you can do ...' thread?

Think we've been there many times before.

I find the OBD consumption a bit like a politician "making this absolutely clear"... I get similar mpg showing when I haven't got my foot down on my S203. It may "only" be a C220 but it goes like a train and I have no complaints. However, the only true mpg measurement is to take the numbers on a fill to fill basis. But that's when it gets a bit disappointing!

the problem is that cars are beginning to be difficult or even impossible to actually 'BRIM' so even the fill to fill figures can vary wildly, which is probably the reason more and more cars have on board fuel computers!

i wonder if there is any legal 'limits' that fuel computers have to adhere to, regarding accuracy (like there is for speedometers etc)?

I don't think so and it would be pretty hard to do - after all it's only a little "spinning wheel" in the fuel system and there's been no need to certify the measurement so far. We don't know of course how rigged they might be - after all most speedometers are a little "ambitious" (my sat nav shows it to be 2.5 miles per hour more at 40 mph - i.e.: when the car says 40 I'm only doing 38) and I wouldn't be surprised to find that the OBD is showing 10% more than reality just to provide a "feel good" factor!

I must say that I'm still pleasantly surprised at my engine's performance - the "oomph" I have with a 2.2 diesel coupled to an auto box still impresses - especially if I'm doping say 70 in top gear and just accelerate - it still seems remarkable for a diesel - and your larger engine must do so even more.

Anyway, let's enjoy our mpg while we can... we'll all be getting horse-whipped as dirty criminals for using diesel soon!

Wow assumptions!!!!

Yup, tell them to catch me...:p even though my mother in law over my shoulder took it.
In the mean time, I know what you can do with the 6 points and £200 fine ;)

Must be real fun at parties this guy

Oh I love a good party, me - but I bet I'm not the only one who objects to irresponsible drivers who mess around with phones or cameras when they should be concentrating on their driving.
