Hi Guys

This is a strange problem that has been going on for a while. The ignition switch acts normally most of the time but every now and then when the key is removed, the ignition system does not switch off. The dash lights remain on and the engine keeps running.

The "cure" so far, without dismantling anything, is to give the ignition switch a good knock. Instantly the ignition will go off and the engine will stop.

Worryingly (even more so) several times now the ignition has activated itself with the car locked and no key in. When this happens, the engine doesn't start but the battery is quickly drained.

To me this sounds sort of mechanical but I'm worried about taking everything apart. My local garage has agreed to take out the ignition switch for me and is talking about sending it away for refurbishment.

My question is: Has anyone on the forum had a similar experience, and if so, what did they do to fix it ?

Thanks.

Definitely sounds like a failing ignition switch.
