Point to note: with the MAS disconnected I had no blue smoke and no lumpy running in the morning. Let's see what happens tomorrow

So then, no blue smoke or lumpy running this morning, however it's still in limp-home and I had a lovely dark grey smoke haze overtaking a truck. Could I need I new MAS? I will double-check connections later.

115,115 miles - New charge pressure vacuum converter/transducer proven to be faulty.

Front V-groove tyres swapped to rear, much quieter and less road-speed dependant noise - £45

Many thanks to Alex Crow - highly recommended

Now I need to speak to Inchcape Oxford to find out how to claim for the faulty part.

After all that, the replacement part was faulty?

Do you consider your purchase money well and wisely spent?

"STAR plug-in: List of codes as long as your arm but long story short, I require a VAC transducer for the charge system. All codes re-set. £81.58"

Have you thought of a possible alternative vehicle?

No, it's not a good purchase but there you have it. Can't turn back the years. If I'd've known in advance what it would've cost, of course I wouldn't have bought it, but I don't have a crystal ball. Owes me a lot so I'm keeping it for 10+ years. On the plus side, there are very few faults left so it should turn out ok, and it's a nice car to drive at the end of the day

Sad thing is unless you own a car that's worth next to nothing whenever a fault comes along it makes sense to fix it...then the more you spend and the more that's sorted just makes it more of a keeper. so you can very quickly be forced into thousands of pounds of repairs doing the "wise" thing.

I have a car worth £1k that is basically reliable and doesn't have too many idiosyncrasies so it would be hard to know what to do if anything broke that would cost around its value (luckily apart from some occasional sub £400 bills there's been nothing so i've never been in this predicament in 10yrs of motoring) but if need be i'd probably spend £800+ on it as cant be bothered to get another car and go through all those risks and then it would "owe me" so i'd probably keep on spending if bad luck made this nessecary and more things failed...and you never know what the total bill may be...

115,495 miles: Replacement charge pressure vacuum converter/transducer fitted under warranty. Minor misunderstanding with Sytner Newbury on nature of fault but amiably resolved and pleased with their service. Top crumpet on reception.
