getting back to the car... what atrocious luck. Then, I'm looking at your first post, looks like the tyres only lasted 15000 miles?

I haven't recorded everything (or anything as it happens) on my 270 W210, but I've had it 7 years, done about 80,000 miles, and probably spent about 3500 euros, or 2500 quid on it, although I'm not particularly fussy and just want it through the mot. Also, i drive slowly, tyres last about 30000 miles, and i get a real 42mpg on anything but really short journeys.

30,000 miles? Blimey! 42 mpg would be like winning the lottery for me!

sorry to rub it in, but last week i was on a straight flat empty A-road, 25ºC, cruise control and airco on at 56mph, and was getting 55mpg! That on a car with 185000 miles on the clock, not bad.

Is it a real pain then Alex? I have the instructions and it doesn't look too bad other than needing another pair of hands when refitting

Like many jobs, it is easy if everything comes apart OK, and you don't forget anything.

Some odds and ends purchased in preparation of the headlamps coming out and being restored.

3M headlamp restoring kit: £20
2 x D2R 4300K bulbs: £15
2 x H1 bulbs and 2 x 501 LED bulbs: £6
2 x axle stands: £20
240v electric drill, not-branded: £15

Motor has developed a horrendous metallic clicking noise over 3,000 rpm on heavy load, engine speed dependant since the charge pressure vacuum transducer was replaced. Will have it checked out.

Mine had the same noise, under hard load between 2-3krpm. It was a blocked injector dumping fuel into a cylinder causing very bad diesel knock.

Eventually star showed the faulty injector, but not until the car was nearly undriveable!

Good to know Alexander. I'm booked in so let's see if it shows anything.

I skimmed through most of the posts but the very first post left me with the mouth wide open and glad I bought the w211 late 2006 model.

I know that Mercedes quality standards changed around 1994 ish and they took a nosedive in the surveys as a result but supposedly they were getting back to a more solid footing from around 2003?

I can't imagine that amount of financial carnage in one car ....

118,212 miles: MoT test fail £25.00

LH headlamp output too low due to deteriorated lens
Rear fog lamp not working
Front wiper does not clear windscreen effectively
Exhaust system not adequately supported (rear box bracket broken)

Advisory: RH headlamp deteriorated lens

I disconnected the MAS to get it through the smoke test.

05/10/12; 118,434 miles. Visit to Alex Crow in sunny Suffolk.

Further STAR test since vacuum transducer fitted and excessive smoke on medium and heavy load. EGR fault fixed with EGR shunt fitted.
Injector knock at higher rpm - no.1 suspect is no.1 injector, to be re-visited at a later date.
RH headlamp and new front fog lamps fitted, rear silencer bracket welded back in to place, sheared heat shield screws replaced as required.
Front bumper re-fitted properly. £184.03

New front wiper blade £11
New front fog lamps £60

Many thanks to Alex Crow and a hearty recommendation from me

Useless fact: Stowmarket has a Wimpy! (Quarterpounder meal deal £7.40)

Remaining work to do for MoT: Fit wiper, fit rear fog lamp bulb, finish headlamp lens sanding/polishing

I always give my car a check before I go for my MOT I don't want a fail for insignificant items and have to go back for them.

I would veer towards couldn't be bothered with it twice.
My car has just passed its MOT and yes I did check it out before I went.
