Stuck in low gear again!!!

W210 Stuck in gear.

This one is common as muck; it applies to all models up to about 2004 but is most common on the 210.

Come out in the morning and start the car, drive of up the road and you notice that the gearbox is not changing gear correctly, staying in first or second, you pull over and switch off and restart, the car then changes gear correctly, you carry on and forget the whole thing!

The next day the same thing happens, you do the above again and the fault clears!

Right what’s going on?

The biggest cause of this fault is that the battery voltage is down due to the battery nearing its sell by date! When you start In the morning , the cranking amps needed to throw the starter in and crank the engine is causing a loss of power to the other systems on the car, the other electrical systems are being starved of voltage!

For some reason the gearbox control module is the first to kick off! The control module detects the loss of voltage and then stores a fault code in the control module, the gear box then refuses to change gear because of this,

What then happens is, because by this time the car has been running for 5 mins, the battery has had its voltage topped up by the alternator, you restart and the fault is then put to a stored fault, as above, gearbox goes back to normal!!

Cause of this, low battery voltage, car been sat, or a new battery needed,

Most times a replacement battery will cure, on the odd car the fault codes will need to be erased before the box returns to normal!!!

I've had this problem, battery was needed changing, changed and error codes on diagnostics (speed sensor fault and shift sensor fault) needed to be reset. Worked for a a couple of weeks but its stuck in low gear again.

Could a sensor be faulty now?

I have also recently had a a/c compressor seize and aux belt snap and a battery/alternator fault came up, obviously no belt running alternator. But I have had compressor replaced and new belt fitted, battery/alternator fault still appearing even though the alternator is charging battery (voltage before 12v and 14v when engine running).

Does the fault need resetting?
And could this be the cause of the fault on my gearbox?

If a sensor needs replacing How much? and Where is it?

Thanks
David

Stuck in low gear again!!!

Just had the fault codes read:-

Three faults appearing
P-220A the speed comparison of Y3/6n2 to Y3/6n3 is implausible
P-2502 The gear is implausible or the transmission is slipping
P-2001 ETC control module (N15/3) is faulty

Any ideas where to start??

Had codes reset, car working normal again. Something is not working correctly.

Thanks

David

Use the search facility. Plenty covered on this topic but I'm not saying that's your issue. It'll help give you a broader picture however

+2 for that, the codes certainly point to it.

Finally got mine fixed

See my previous post about sticking in low gear.

So I took my W210 to a specialist dealer - he diagnosed the problem with the shifter unit not communicating properly with the ECU.

Apparantly the shifter unit boards are prone to failure (especially if you spill stuff over the gear selector!).

Replacement shifter unit fitted and all running smoothly now...

Had my electroplate replaced and still having problems with car sticking in gear, think my shifter unit is playing up. Will need to take back to garage for confirmation.

What was the cost of a new shifter unit?

Were the fault codes erased after the electoplate was replaced?

I'm not 100% sure what they done after fitting the electroplate (if they reset code or not).

I couldn't call them back today, garage had closed before fault reoccurred. I'll call them tomorrow.

I'd booked the car in to replace electroplate on my own back, had the codes read in different garage to where I had plate fitted.
I assumed the electroplate needed replacing after reading up on the fault codes.

Hi. My C320 W203 of 2001 has the same problem. I have stationed the car for 3 months as was away. On my return car had a flat battery, I charged the battery and took the car for a clean. Then realise that the gear box stuck on W mode. I can put the gear to D/N/R and drive the car but it is in limbo. I went to a mechanic had the code P2006 touchpush button voltage: implausible I have put a new original benz battery 100amp as the one before. But still no change. Any help

I am not sure. All I know the mechanic cleared the code. Now how to reset the system? As this morning the car didn't want to start either
