Hi folks, my w211 e 200 kompressor 1.8 2004 died this morning 6am, it started fine drove 300/400 meters, then slowly started to die, tried to restart -cranking ok but no start, tried it again this afternoon, cranking ok but no start- checked fuses tapped the relays no joy - have concluded its the CPS.
I also tried a jumpstart from a diesel passat - cranking but no start- will order CPS tomorrow but I cant see where the location on the car for it ?
Would anyone have any photos or tips in locating the CPS location on my car?
Thanks for your time,Dermot.

The CPS on your W211 is on the n/s of the gearbox closest to the bulk head. A bit awkward to reach and see.
This video shows how to do it.

I would get it confirmed that it is the CPS before replacing it. They usually die when the engine is hot and restart after the engine cools.

Thanks for that video, should be able to find it tomorrow in daylight
I deceided that it was the CPS because even with the jumper cables connected it still didnt start, was getting 13.5 - 13.7 volts on the dashboard display, the only other thing i can suspect is the fuel pump- but dont know where those relays /fuses might be?
Any other thoughts? The car never warmed up today at all but wont start up.
Yesterday did a trip back to Dublin from Athlone 100+ miles with 3 stops and starts no problem, but today 300meters !!

In an ideal world you would need the fault codes read to determine if it is your CPS at fault but thats not going to be easy if you can't get the car started.

This should help you locate the fuel pump relay

I just checked that fuse- its okay- gonna pull that relay - get a new one from motor factors tomorrow and see if it solves problem. If not will get CPS, thanks for your input - will report back fingers crossed

I doubt it is the CPS....how have you deduced that it is? What diagnosis have you done? Have you scanned it? Have you got a fault code for the CPS? Have you checked the fuel pressure?

A CPS failure won't cause it not to go after 300m and I have never replaced a CPS on a M271 engine. Just because it won't go off jump leads doesnt mean that the CPS is at all the issue.

DO NOT GUESS!! Fault - Diagnosis - Cure.

NOT: Fault - guess - fail - guess again - fail - add infinitum..

Fitted the new CPS tonight-no joy.
Motor factors didn't have the fuel pump relay so maybe that's suspect?
Gonna have it towed tomorrow if I can find someone to do it on a Saturday.
Steve just read your replyand gonna hand it over to local indie, no beer for me this weekend

Don't throw any more parts at it until you have had it looked at by an indy. Fuel pressure is more likely than CPS anyway from what you have described.

Replacing an alternator or voltage control module won't help start the car. Take the advice of Steve above, a respected indy who is far more likely to know than you and I.

Got car towed to garage.
He rang me and said fuel pump gone.
So that's that sorted.
Thanks for all the replies.
Will get him to give it a complete going over while he has it

Picked up the car today after getting new fuel pump installed, mechanic said it started up first go- he checked for fault codes- none present - car driving well now.
Cost €500 ouch
Pump cost was €325 alone.
Happy to have it back tho
Thanks guys for all your input.
