Hi everyone

I'v had an issue with my mercedes today. I drove up to a mate's place today and the car drove fine. While waiting for him on a downhill slope, i had the car running with handbrake engaged. However, when i wanted to move, the car only moved forward slightly but then it wouldnt move at all! Revs wont go up if i select reverse or drive, but they do go up if i rev the car in neutral!

Because the car had moved, i was stuck on a junction with half of the car on a busy road and half of it on a side road! I put the car in neutral and managed to push it onto the main road and parked it up sideways while pushing it. I locked the car using the key fob.

On a second thought, i realised that considering that it's a busy single carriage way, and car was parked on a slight bend, it could be a potential hazard if i left the car there.

I decided to push it further forward so I unlocked the car and tried to move it. The car started fine and to my surprise, i was able to drive it as normal. However, after 2 minutes of drive, the revs started being weird again, I had my foot on gas and the engine was producing the usual level of sound/noise but the car wasnt moving as quick as it should. Then a sound started coming from somewhere, which sounded like a drill machine being run (not being drilled).

I managed to get home and parked it up, opened the bonnet to see if i could smell anything but there was nothing. It couldnt have been parked for more than a minute. I started the car again and felt that the power had returned! But the same problem happened again after a bit of drive.

Could an expert please point me towards what the fault could be? Thanks in advance

Your description is a bit odd. You describe the revs staying as they should be but the speed falling off. In order for that top happen, there has to be some slip somewhere but then I'd expect the revs to rise.
Did you notice any warning lights?
I am wondering whether the problem is not mechanical at all and actually something related to the ESP? I guess a malfunction could cause those sort of symptoms. Revs staying static and car slowing could be the ESP applying the brakes and easing off the throttle if it thinks the car is skidding. Could the noise you heard be the SBC pump priming? As it uses the brakes a lot during ESP activation I'd expect that to happen more frequently (plus the ABS of course).
In any case, the only way you're going to get to the bottom of this is to get it plugged into STAR (the mb diagnosic computer) so you need to get it to a merc specialist for a proper diagnosis.

The box could be low on fluid, and this is the first thing to check and easy to do

thanks for your replies guys. i had the gearbox serviced (gearbox oil changed, etc) and the problem went away. however, it's come back again :S any ideas what's causing this?

also...i have just realised that once in "D" mode on gearbox, you cant use triptronic function either :S
