W211 OM642 V6 - Exhaust Manifolds

Hi all,

Has anyone heard of exhaust manifolds breaking up on these engines? Horrible noises and turbo actuator problems prompted investigation - upon looking there are two holes at the exact same spot on both exhaust manifolds either side of the engine - just on the bend down to the flange. Is this a common thing? It's a 2008 car!

id be tempted to complain to MB. even though the car is out of warranty, its not unreasonable to expect an exhaust manifold to last longer than this. most manifolds outlast the car theyre fitted to, especially if the turbo isnt part of it!

Yes very, we have done quite a few, higher milage cars.

W169, W124, w202, W203, KTM 250 EXC, VW T25 camper and a Polo in a pear tree
As above, manifolds should always be checked with an endoscope in cases of turbo failure (eg jamming vanes).
Also, the vanes and impeller should be checked for F.O.D.
A light metallic rattling noise when engine running is one obvious clue to this manifold failure.
