2003 W211 E320 CDI estate
I bought my 2003 E320 CDI a month ago now and I've been quite impressed with the fuel consumption. For a big fairly powerful estate with a 3.2l engine it's pretty frugal.

I live in quite a remote area and have to drive 40miles to the nearest Tesco etc. The roads I have to drive are A roads and single track roads, both are very hilly and winding. In the past 3 trips I've averaged 46mpg for the trip, the same as my 1.9tdi Ford Galaxy.

2 days ago I replaced the thermostat as it was never getting above 60c. Today with the car reaching proper temperature I managed 50.2 mpg, even with a couple of full throttle overtakes. I'm amazed how good this car is.

So what's everyone else getting from there w211 E class?

I think your experience is pretty typical Andy.

I ran a W211 320 CDI for 3 years and around 48,000 miles. Mpg improved with mileage, initially being low 40s and latterly around 49 on brim to brim measurements. It would readily average over 50 mpg on motorway trips at around 75 mph.

Alex, it's good to know it doing what it's supposed to.

AMGeed, I would gladly give up 25mpg to have an AMG, unfortunately I don't think the wife would be so happy

My old 270 used to average around 43/44 over 2k each month. On the longer runs in summer I'd see 52/53 and I don't hang about either, most of my travels were in rush hour as well so not best for economy either.

I always thought the IL6 was a great engine Rob. I had one in the W 211 and the W220, and the performance was excellent, and the economy was stellar for cars of that size.

Never achieved the same economy with the V6 - but there are possibly other "environmental enhancements" with that engine which handicap it. Paradoxical really, when we are all striving for efficiency.

I have a E350CDI 2011, always see 50mpg between services. I do very little town driving, & any journey is normally over 20 miles.

Amazing considering the old girls done 170,000 miles E320 Deisel.

I've just done a 100 journey taking it very easy at 70 on the motorway (fully loaded car 4 passengers and all the luggage) and I averaged 38. The car is a 2007 and has done 96000 miles. Also it was done using cheapo supermarket fuel. Might try another tank ful of premium fuel and see if it is any better.

Now I discovered last weekend that my 215 will do better fuel efficiency on the motorway at 70mph (clearly I wouldn't go above that speed...) than at 55-60mph. That's very interesting, and goes some way to showing the design intent of the car (long distances over good roads at high speeds).

So... I strongly suspect that my 211 E320 V6 CDi will demonstrate something similar...

S500 (W222) 2014. Turbo 4.7 V8 with loads of toys. Superfast luxury.
My E500 has an average reading of 24.2 over the last 2,700 miles of mixed running. I don't go mad (often) but I don't hang around either and the smooth power of the V8 is worth every penny of fuel.

around 22mpg, a bit less than my old M5 but the E55 has over 25% more power.

Very respectable overall mpg for a performance saloon car Pete.

Identical to the figure I got over 24,000 miles in my 1994 500 SL. Mixed motoring whilst making good progress. The V8 is the ideal engine, other than the fuel economy perhaps.

Similar to you, on brim to brim but have only managed 1300 miles as yet & still exploring its behaviour.

Replaced thermostat after reading another thread here on 2004 W211 320 (195,000 mls). Engine now reaches a surprising 115 in a couple of miles, and average MPG from 28 to 38. 40+ easily at any speed, 50+ if hyper-careful...
