Hello,

I am new to the W211 so I wonder if someone can help me out with a couple of things.

1) RHD/LHD change on Xenon Headlights
I have read somewhere the EU w211 have the ability to change the headlight with some switch (mechanical or electrical idk) located somewhere on the headlight assembly itself. Is that correct and if yes does anybody have a picture of that switch ?

2) Convenience Open/Close feature
On my old S202 I had this feature with the IR based opening and closing of all windows by keeping the lock/unlock button depressed on the fob and pointing it at the IR receiver on the drivers door. The W211 has this same looking little 'window' on the door handle but so far I failed to make this work. Is that an optional extra and if yes would it be listed in a VIN decoder and which number would I be looking for. What I mean to ask is how do I find out if my W211 has a defect in the Convenience Open/Close feature or does it actually not have that feature fitted/enabled ?

I am driving a 2005 E 270 CDI Avantgarde

Kind Regards
Jan

Hold the key very very close and very steady to the "window". Press open (or close) then press and hold again...should work.

I have read about the possible 'user errors' before, also possible sunlight issues. I tried in the shade very steady at any range from 1m to right up the IR receiver. Also keep depressed and pressed two times. Unfortunately no luck. Before I start digging any deeper I just wonder how I can find out if my vehicle even has that feature or not.

Thanks
Jan

The feature is present. On my W219 CLS it was very hit and miss. And when I say that I do mean it. Maybe once or twice it worked from distance in the soace of two years. Otger than that keep the key pointed at the sensor about a centimeter away and I would it to work mostly. Not really convenient if it has to be that close though lol

Convenience open/ close has to be activated in the DIS before you can make it work using your keyfob.

Press the steering wheel buttons until you find the Convenience menu, and take a look ;)

My 2009 W211 can't change headlight to LHD , and my 2009 CLK can't either .
As the the global opening of Windows , maybe try new batteries ? There is nothing on either of my cars that needs setting up in convenience function , both cars just work , but only on the drivers side within 9 feet ish .

Wighty, are you sure you don't have a small white lever very awkwardly placed on the rear of your headlamps? They don't convert to LHD (they do on the 212 facelift onwards) but the lever lifts a dazzle shield into place to cut off the dogleg beam extension for kerb/ verge illumination. Called "tourist mode" and it's been a feature on MBs from the late 90s...

I've tried on my E320 to get my hands in , but without getting an injury I can't get the caps off the dipped headlight . Think I'll go with the 2 quid stick on douberry from eBay .

Hi again,

I have checked in the settings, under 'convenience' is only the setting for the folding mirrors, nothing about convenience opening/closing. I get the impression it was a standard feature on the W211 and nothing optional ? Just wondered cause a friend had a 'Classic' where this also did not work. The battery is definitely the next step, I try that before I look into taking the door handle apart. I have read that is not a small job.

Thanks for your help
Jan

PS: have not yet checked on the Xenons but I have read so far that its not a conversion but rather just 'cutting off' the top left part of the beam, in that case I have already the answer I needed. Was hoping I could use continental Headlight assemblies instead of special UK/IRL types and simply switch them.
