Hi guys,

I have discovered a crack in my front windscreen, down in the black print area below the dash front. I guess I will have to have this repaired through my insurance glass policy.

My car has auto wipers fitted (standard I think for this model?) so can anyone please tell me:

1. Will this incur a penalty on top of the usual glass excess?
2. Are there any MB quirks I need to be aware of when having a windscreen changed?
3. Will Autoglass etc be able to do this, or do I need to visit an MB glass specialist (if there is such a thing)?

Thanks all

I always say when having a screen changed, have it done in a mercedes workshop so if the auto wiper need to be set it is all done at the same time, and no excess for any screen.

Would that be covered through my insurance though, Malcolm- having it done by MB, I mean?

I had mine repaired, I spoke to the guy doing it and he had done several with auto wipers, he said he had never had any problems with them needing to be re-set.

It seems there are 2 differing views on it and some may while others may not

I had to reset 6 times on my own STAR after a new screen before it would take it.

That's what I mean though- a new screen from MB would cost a small fortune I'd expect?

You do it through you insurance company and pay the excess £60 or what ever but have it fitted at mercedes in there rear yard, there is no cost on doing this.

Brilliant, thanks Malcolm. I wasn't aware that this was possible. I've hardly ever used main stealer work for anything on any of my cars.

The new screen should be calibrated on star when its replaced, but you will find that it will still work without the coding, just may not be as accurate.

Insist that the insurance company use a Mercedes OEM windscreen

Your small print may not entitle you to an OEM 'screen. I know my policy on the 210 specifically said that it would be of 'similar standard' (or words similar). I could pay the difference for a genuine screen but I would have to pay a lot more and it simply wasn't worth it. I was more concerned with the fitment than the glass.

As it turned out the fitter was very experienced (Auto Windscreens) and I was happy with the job. They asked if it had a top tint and rain sensor (which it did) and Bob's your uncle.

Thanks for all of the responses, chaps. I'll check up on my policy small print then.

2005 CL500.
Could it be repaired rather than replaced...and avoid the hassle.
