Yep 7g isn't that smooth. I find in stop/start it's better to be in C than S so you don't get that harsh downshift into 1st as you are coming to a halt.

I await your report re the oil change.

Be interested to hear it too.
My experience was the full oil change ( inclu TC drain and filter and a complete clean) did slightly "change" the gearbox, rather than improve it.

That said, pre oil change I would have said it was perfect, silky smooth i.e. The only way I could discern a gear change or work out what gear she was in [and still is], is to use the down paddle until the revs rise!

But I did feel post oil change, after spirited driving in S, it seemed to hold into the lower gears slightly longer, ie. ready to pile on the torque! And She seems to adapt to the driving style slightly faster.

Of course this could all be Placebo effect!

Note the car had done 40,000 miles, (its a 7G Plus) and when changed Phil said the oil look extremely clean.
Personally I would always change the atf at 37,000 miles or 5 years.

Ok, it’s been a few days since the transmission oil change so it’s time for a quick update.

No massive changes in smoothness or performance but I am yet to experience the hard change down at the end of my road.

I think that I’m getting more engine breaking as the transmission selects a lower gear compared with how it used to be before the oil change but I need to do a few more miles to really get a good feel for it.

My car is ten years old and has done 65k miles. There was nothing in the FSH to suggest that the transmission oil had ever been changed so it was definitely overdue a service and I am pleased that I had it done. If nothing else I got to meet Ian (smashing bloke) and experience Star’s high quality service - will use again!

I will update again in a couple of days. Watch this space as the weather is supposed to get much colder and it will be interesting to see how the transmission copes.

Nice one. If you don't mind me asking: what is the going rate for a trans fluid change these days? And was that for the full fluid change including torque converter?

£200 inc VAT, which included replacement of oil from the torque converter.

Another update.

The hard downshift at the end of my road is no more and on the motorway 7th gear engages regardless how gently I accelerate.

So far so good.

That’s good to hear, pleased the changes have improved.

The changes when cold on my E350cdi weren’t the best but have improved lately. The only thing thats changed is the tick-over, for some reason the car tick-over was 550rpm on cold start and has increased to 850rpm which is what it should be during the warm-up phase

I can’t account for this change, all I’ve done lately is put Millers injector cleaner through the engine which might have cleaned the fuel system and I’ve used BP fuel exclusively since the car was bought 2 years ago, anyway quite pleased as the gear changes are much smoother during warm-up

The improvement in the gearbox makes the car so much more enjoyable to drive

Whatever improvement I think I can detect, the 7G in my CLS is best described as clunky compared with the silky smooth 8 speed automatic in my wife’s BMW.

how new is the BM?

later 8 speed ones look at the sat nav and use that to help decide when to change (ends up with on ave 40% less wasted messing about up and down needless changes that auto's like to do while no one is looking)

That must get interesting when the SatNav loses where it is or thinks it is somewhere else, which they all do at some point - that lovely msg 'Off road' Does it have a AWD setting?
