Hi guys. I've searched on various forums but couldn't find much info about this particular matter. So the story is as follows, the problem occurred suddenly without any warning or any noises to indicate something has gone wrong. One day it just all of a sudden, started making this weird noise.

So the problem only occurs if you turn the steering wheel left or right and simultaneously accelerate. If you, for example, turn the steering wheel left (no matter how sharp or vigorously) whilst the car is coasting, no noise. If you turn the steering wheel to the left and apply acceleration, it suddenly makes this weird and very loud crack, crack, crack kind of a noise. This crank does sometimes feedback to the steering wheel. I've posted a video on YouTube (link below) for you to have a look. Such a strange noise. If you turn without accelerating then no noise, as soon as you press the pedal it goes mental. There is no issue if you accelerate in a straight line, no issues with braking / stopping and then accelrating. This noise only occurs when you turn and accelerate. Turning left makes more noise than turning right. I took it to a local F1 Autocentre as it was the closest garage to me and they told me my shock absorber is snapped = £290. I took it to another F1 Autocentre who advised my shocks, springs are mint and no issues or play in them and they couldn't find any issue after test driving. The only slight issue is that on the left hand side of the car, this rubber guard / gaiter is broken (the one on the shock absorber) and they told me to buy a new one from dealers. This can't be the issue, can it? I mean, it's a rubber / plastic tiny bit.

I thought of getting the top mounts replaced but now I'm not sure at all.

Please advise. I've looked it up everywhere but honestly can't find anything like this on any forum. My car is a B180 from 2006. Thanks in advance.

THat sounds like the outer CV joints on the drive shafts are worn. What is the mileage on the car? Are the CV joint gaiters OK?

Thank you for getting back to me! I called MB garage the other day and described to them the issue in great detail. Their response was that the outer CV joint is failing. I then remembered something, so I double checked the advisory on my MOT (totally forgot about this) and it says: "Nearside Outer Front constant velocity joint gaiter deteriorated, but preventing the ingress of dirt". So I guess the outer CV joint is now damaged because the gaiter deteriorated to an extent it leaked or allowed dirt to get into the joint, damaging it and as such now needs replacing.

I ordered an outer CV joint kit from Eurocarparts yesterday for £45 (with 36% offer). Got some oil filter and 6 litres of Castrol whilst I am at it. Will tell you if it's fixed.

The car has only covered 82k miles.

The car has covered 82k miles. Sorry to ask, but are gaiters and CV joints not the same thing or are they situated in separate places? I bought a CV joint kit.

The gaiters are the rubber boots that enclose the CV joints sealing the grease in and the dirt out. The CV joint kit you bought will include the joint itself, the clips, the gaiter and a tube of grease. When you get down to doing the job, it will be clear.

I've never done a B Class CV joint, but if you are not familiar with mechanical things, it might be best to get it done by an MB Indy if there is one near you as the drive shaft will need to be separated from the hub and will almost certainly require the front suspension to be split. If you are a mechanic or a DIY person, please forget this advice and accept my apologies!!

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately, I don't have the tools nor time to DYI, however my local garage will fit my own parts for £100 (this includes CV joint, oil filter and oil itself) - I reckon that's a good price.

The garage replaced the broken part with a new CV joint kit. The problem has gone away now and the car drives as smooth as always. Felt so embarrassed turning my wheel for a whole week .

Whilst they were working on my car, they've also replaced my oil filter and filled my baby with 5.8 litres of Castrol oil. Driving it feels so satisfying.

I think there is something wrong with me , I even sleep better when the lawnmower has new oil , let alone 8.5 L in my E class :)

Same as.drive shaft. fill with fresh grease then try again it will tell you if it is the cv joint noise.
Cut cv gaitor clip off .fill.then hose clip back on gaitor and test car full speed to drive the grease in to the joint.
