this question has probably been asked 100's of times before but I can't find a link.

I drive a 2007 R171 280 SLK. I don't like using cheap supermarket fuels and have been using Shell regular unleaded since buying the car four months ago. Just wondering what other people's thoughts are on fuel ....

I use primarily super unleaded from either Sainsbury's or BP

My philosophy is that as modern cars employ complex emissions systems I prefer to use premium fuels, BP being my preference, I'm not convinced that supermarket fuels contain enough cetane enhancer/cleaning additives.

it's surprising what a difference fuels can make to how an engine performs, I notice a definite drop off in low down pulling power requiring more gear changes with supermarket fuel especially with the small 1.8 diesel in the Focus

Think you'll find that MotorFuelGroup, being one of the largest bulk fuel retailers in the UK, supply and manage a wide variety of branded fuel stations, such as Murco, BP, Jet, Shell and Texaco.

This suggests that, wherever you buy your fuel, there is a high possibility that it has originated from the same bulk storage facility, and will be of the same spec.

I believe there are just six refineries in the UK, so would be reasonable to say the fuel is all the spec.

However...

I also understand that each fuel brand has it's own additive pack, some of these additives are not added to the fuel until the point of delivery.

Every new vehicle we buy we log the mileage from a full tank of fuel from each of the fuel stations that surround us, you'd be surprised at the results.

For my old CLK i was surprised to find we got slightly better mileage from Tesco fuel Than BP, but every car is different.

I get differing miles from a tank anyway, even using the same fuel. Depends how heavy my right foot has been, weather, traffic ...... ;)

Nothing but premium diesel in mine, more for the extra additives than the hope of more mpg or performance.

Not a lot of choice then, huh?

Tend to go wherever.. Tesco for the points and recently Costco (its 5ppl cheaper than even Asda)

Never had any issues with cars and I monitor mpg on every car I've had or have

There is a load of tosh spoken and written about fuel. All fuel has accord to certain standards if it to be sold in the UK. For this reason I have bought from the cheapest available source (usually supermarkets) for the last 30 odd years and have never had a problem. Why pay more than you need to? It doesn't make any sense to me.

There was a great post on here a few days ago specifying what goes into our petrol and why you should make your choice. Look it up.
