In the Triumph motorbike world there has been a right fiasco with k&n oil filters, the ones with the nut on top. Several owners found they were leaking but one poor owner didn't notice when the nut removed itself and all the oil emptied out ruining the engine.

To give them their due k&n did pay for repair/replacement, after lengthy chats with the owner.

wheres you proof of this guys ?
Google K&N filter efficiency. There's loads on the web. However just using logic....
If a K&N is 1% better flowing than stock how much extra power do you think you'll get? 10% (the threshold at which most people will notice it)? No. Maybe 1% (if youre lucky) so unnoticeable.
Extending the logic a filters job is to remove dust and grit. For a given surface area there is only one way to increase flow and that's to decrease filtration. You cannot get anything for nothing after all.
So if we go to the extreme and remove the filter entirely (nothing can flow better than no filter after all) do we see a 10% improvement in power over stock? No. We might see 5% if the filter and housing are poorly designed (in which case the design engineer should be sacked) but in most cars it'll be negligible.
So fundamentally they're a waste of money and one of the most successful marketing stories ever .

Modern manufacturers are very aware of fuel consumption and emissions and efficiency of the entire inlet tract has a part to play. They will generally make it as good as they can as a result.

Here's a scientific peer reviewed test of filters. If you aren't aware of Science direct it's a repository for scientific research used by engineers and scientists the world over (think 'The Lancet' for engineers and scientists).

3rd day in a row top down along the coast, wind dropped (along with the temperature)
Top up today driving down the coast as it's a tad soggy out there
