Socks are only of use in getting you started off I believe?

This is my understanding also, as well as them being single use only? But I could have used them to get up 1 Hill this morning

That's what it says on the package of a pair I have - never used them, yet.
They'll shred to bits sharpish, if you try to drive on anything but soft snow, and for a very short distance.

Is right Craig- drive with them on the hard pack and you’ll shred them in a few short miles..
If serious chains are the right answer (even then you have to take them off when you’re on metalled roads..)
I’ve seen this simple solution advertised recently https://www.amazon.co.uk/Swanda-Portable-Emergency-Anti-skid-Universal/dp/B01N10R1WS
Again look ok to get you out of trouble and traction on really hard packed ice

Cable ties. Genius! Looks like a good option actually until they snap off, but still good idea, may order some. Missus was toying with the idea of us driving to Tignes to ski but given the poor performance of the tyres the answer now is “hell no”

I had plastic chains for my old Golf. They were claimed not to shred tarmac. Don’t know if they’re made for two- timbers though.

A much more effective way of moving off slippy ice is my way. Start car, select first gear, release handbrake, check mirrors (to make sure pretty girls are watching) apply full throttle and spin those rear tyres, which in turn will melt the snow and ice hence making contact again with road surface and away you go...................I'll get my coat.....My winter coat and beannie...........:(

Brilliant thanks, let us know as you say if you ever have to use them. To be honest at that price it might be worth having some!

It is a big if. They should work but if they are good why don’t all petrol stations stock them around this time of year? I mean, they stock sleds, surely these cable ties could have a massive markup on them.

I ordered these:

and these:

Those area more heavy duty option but as the ones I got were on a vey heap deal I thought they were worth a poke. Does it say they are single use? I imagine hey would not survive long and, like snow socks, should only be used in problem areas to get you moving.

It doesn't say they are but looking at them I can't see a release clip. I guess you'll know soon enough!

As it is snowing again I think I made the right choice to try something, in Jan I may look into something a bit more permanent like a hybrid chain that can be driven on longer distance without taking my wheel arches with them :)

I'm thinking I might look at those things I linked to for getting our estate off our er.. estate. IMG_20171211_081843.jpg

It may not look it but there is a reasonably steep rise up the road and no way to get a run up at it.
