If it’s not so bad you can just change the chain and feed it though. Ideally the gears should be changed as they tend to wear pretty badly :(
There’s a few horror pictures on the forum.

I do wonder if part way through the job you’ll get a call advising they’ve noticed the gears are badly worn and ££££ additional is required and you’re part way through and over a barrel… :(
Yes that was my thoughts exactly. I have cancelled the job and will wait until I can get it in with a local MB specialist which has yet to quote me, but after some of the comments on here, it has not inspired me to use a dealership. I would upload a vid of my engine starting, but not sure how to do this.

The gears are not on that receipt buddy , so no they won’t get done .
Yes I have queried this with the dealership and they say if they are needed they are around £500 each. I would rather know before hand and have an idea of cost rather than them ring and say that it will be.... more.

Thought it was cheap, no gears and they are the most expensive part of the job. It could be just the chain or both, the gears can fail internally and produce a clatter on start up, they also trip an eml for cam timing.

That sounds possibly more than a chain, a chain or even the gears Chain and gear rattles normally disappear when the oil pressure builds up, also not sure if I heard an uneven turnover??? Poss low compression on a cyl. I wouldn't drive that, not even from yard to workshop.

Took in into Virtue Mercedes Aylesbury to be fixed yesterday. I got a quote and the car went in. They rang me before they had actually had taken anything off the car and I asked if they would check the gears on changing the chain and they said no, as they need to remove more covers to check and it would be another 4 hours labour, did I want that done? I was under the impression that they are accessible when you remove the chain. So I asked them if they have started the car yet and they said no, so I took it back and booked it into a local indi, but they cannot do it until 24th April. They will change the chain and gears at the same time. I wonder if the car is worth the 2k bill as it is a 2011, but if I get rid and get another newer one I could be in a similar situation in a couple of years, so better the car I know and like.

I'll look up the price of the completed job as we finished it yesterday. Timing chain, tensioner and both camshaft gears and chain rails. The gear hadn't failed internally but showed damage from the chain. The oil and filter was also changed due to metal contamination from the chain. We used aftermarket gears but a genuine chain as cheap ones seem to be made from chocolate.

Thank you. I have booked it in next month as still no one can do it until the end of the month. I have been quoted £1953.73 with all MB Parts,

Your cars are keeping you busy!
Yes and spending my money. When I was younger I would have done the timing chain myself, but as you get older, 68yrs it seems a bit daunting. lol.
