Hi, im ready to fill up for the first time.
I dont know what petrol to put in my 03 sl 350.

regular or premium unleaded?

There is no shell v power anywhere near me. The highest RON i can get is tesco 99

I am a low mile user, so wouldnt mind the added detergents in tesco 99. but ti be honest, i dont know whats best.

Any help would be greatly received

Nick

I put any old muck in my cars but that doesn't mean I am right; although the hand books only advise 95 RON so I take the view that is perfectly adequate.

Shell V-Power Nitro Plus, a much higher class of dead dinosaur IMHO

There is no point at all in using an octane that the engine cannot use, so 95 is perfect for cars other than the AMG, these and the newer twin turbo's require the 98+

It all comes down the the compression ratio, below a certain figure you are just wasting your money,,, it tells you in the handbooks what the lowest octane rating is for your car.

cheers Malcolm, its the "minimum" required, so anything over is better? or just a waste of money?

A total waste on money as the engine cannot benefit at all from it. Its the same thing as using oil in the engine thats good for a temp of 400c

In the USA they do not even have 95 ron as I understand it.

Certainly it won't be detrimental, if you're happy paying the trivial extra per tank, why not?

That is just silly to say that, with 245BHP who needs super fuel:shock::shock:

Why pay £10 per tank full more than you have to:shock:

Use what rating the manual says, then you are doing what MB recommend.

245bhp is a lot compared to my usual diesel van!
is super/premium laced with detergents as well? that helps keep an engine clean?
I can see both sides to premium V regular, my friend can not run his car on regular 95 as it will barely run. it is a turbo jap import tho.

245 hp is nothing from a 3.5 litre engine, the 5litre 113 only gives out 308BHP.

As before in the USA the regular fuel is 87, and the best 93.

Purely working on the assumption that a fool and his money are soon parted, read this bit, its all over the web

To get the best performance out of your vehicle, you should use the octane recommended in your owner’s manual. Most vehicles do not benefit from a higher octane level than what is recommended but using a lower octane than recommended can cause engine knocking or pinging in some cars, the lowest in the UK is 95 ron so no problem at all, its countries like the USA where the lowest is 87 ron that care is needed.

Engines do not get dirty these days.
