The time has come for me to get another MB. I'm fed up with traipsing round in a van and want a Benz for the occasional trip in comfort.

I have a budget of around £2K but that isn't set in stone and for the right car I can add more to the pot, but I don't want to spend a lot if possible. For instance, my old E320 estate cost me around £1K if I recall and only went because of the rust and the black death starting.

So, I'm looking for some suggestions please. Anything considered that has 4+ seats and 4 wheels and a bit of luxury, albeit old luxury. Estate (preferably), convertible, 4x4...not a sports car and not A or B class please. :D

What you you buy for around that money?

A nice 202. I think you should be able to get a pretty nice one for £2k. Do it before they go up in value. I think really good ones have started to appreciate now.

What about another E280/320 . There should be plenty of unloved big diesels around by now ?

Nice 210 estates, especially diesels, are almost extinct now

Thats a lot of car for £2500.
That's top money for a 210. We paid £600 for our 210 estate (same year) with just 10k more miles. Okay ours needing wings but even so...

For £2k I'd be looking at 211s or 203s depending how much space you need.

There are some nice low miles E240s there. If your annual mileage is low the 240 could make a lot of sense as the difference in fuel costs would be offset by purchase price. And that V6 petrol is wonderfully refined...

C240 estate 2002
I get the feeling that the M112 E26 was not that popular an engine and there are few C/E240 around with really low mileage.
It is a bit underwhelming performance wise but it is certainly not underpowered at 170bhp.
I guess it is outshone by the C320 which is a lot more powerful and not that much worse MPG.
I'm pretty happy with it as it is buttery smooth and apparently virtually bulletproof.

Example 72k 2001 C240 £2k

I wasn't recommending it per se ;)
Just using it as an example of low mileage 240s

That C270 looks a good spec.

Thank you all for taking the trouble to reply. It really helps to get opinions from people who know their cars.
I was sort of hoping I could sneak a V8 in at that price, maybe an E55  but I'm willing to look at almost anything. I'm sniffing around a 97 S500 advertised on this site but not made my mind up yet. I'm a bit worried about ongoing maintenance costs on that one!

An old Mercedes can empty your bank account very quickly.

A Lexus would be a better option.

I think I am firmly in the Mercedes camp! Whilst the Lexus's (Lexii?) are formidable runners they have never felt as involving as a Merc to me...a bit like Audi...something intangible missing.

We spent a year with a £1400 14 year old LS400 and it was brilliant. Sold it for the same price 9000 miles later.
