thought i would try this..
think of all the gimicks and related tech on yr car . what would you consider a useful addition . for example
i ,yrs ago worked on an old car,i think a riley ? . and it did not have the useless jack that comes with most ,even very expensive cars ,it had 4 electric jacks built into the outrigger xmembers , jacking up the car involved opening a dash panel and flipping a switch ... that WAS useful... even if only to inspect the brakes ... i accept, modern cars do not often get punctures
on a modern note i would like a system for ABC that provides the driver with a way to get home ,if a strut collapses , like metalastic bushes to fix on , after all ABC is not exactly known for being trouble free , a high press filter on the system ,to filter out crap BEFORE it gets pumped through yr ABC valves would be a reasonable upgrade . filtering the return,is simply, the cheapskate way out .

Good idea on high pressure filter system for ABC.

How about a pressure gauge for on your cooling system or audible warn if pressure drops whilst hot? - avoiding a warped head!

Some days I wish the CL had a rear wiper!

My Uncle Pip, had an Austin Sheerline that had a self jacking system :)

Switchable ESP and ABS, as both these are safety risks in some particular road conditions which we encounter frequently in rural Australia as would others who use dirt roads frequently. It's not rocket science to include a switch in a circuit.

My uncles MG saloon, can't remember the the age of it had built in hydraulic jacks on each corner, you had to pump them down with a small handle. My old Rover 90 with Jager instruments had a button under the fuel gauge that when pushed showed the oil level in the sump.
As for oil filters I like the small centrifugal ones as fitted on some diesel generators, the oil pressure jets out of angled pipes that spin the inner casing and any heavy particles are deposited on the outer wall that is lined with paper for easy cleaning.

Some old Rileys did indeed have built in jacks, although I didn't know they were electric.
I, too, remember the button on the Rover P4 dash for reading the oil level on the fuel gauge.

The thing I wish for most often is a heated windscreen, but I think I read somewhere that Ford have a patent on that.
Maybe if my car got to running temperature inside of 1,000 miles it might not be so high on my list...

centrifugal filters. i had them on maggi duetz m26k trucks in 80 they are a grand idea , coupled with twin oil filters , only issue some staff did not know about them, not good when they run out of room to fling the oil out.

i would like on any car over 35k to have the diagnostics built in, give a start up report and be able to contact the supplier myself ,if i want to book it in , that would be what i call useful tech ,even if it was an option...after all we, most time still end up at the stealers for the parts for the first 5 yr or so .

I'd forego all the gimmicks if they could just get the basic design right. How about a boot lid that when opened in the rain didn't deposits most of the water on it into the boot (yes Mercedes r230 I'm talking about you). As Andrew mentioned filters to take out crud before it enters the system, suspension that when it fails doesn't drop the car onto the tyres damaging wheel arches, a braking system that gives a predictive warning when the pump is getting on a bit or has a failsafe mode (or how about a simple hydraulic system with split diagonals instead of fancy pumps and electronics),
or how about headlights you can change a bulb on without dismantling the front of the car (or engaging the services of contortionist circus performers).

Aluminium, GRP or some other non-rusting body.
Heated windscreen
A long range petrol/diesel alternative (Hydrogen)
Faraday cage to stop phone signals
Dash cam as standard

Oh, wait a minute, all the above exist, so why don't we have them?

and one I would dearly love to see that hasn't been invented yet, as far as I know....
A loud warning device when travelling in anything other than the left lane of UK motorways when the road is clear ahead and to the left.
