my W210 from 2001 has no rust as yet with nearly 100,000 miles. It's an E320 V6 Petrol. Cheers.

01/01/2000 W210 E280. Needed new wing's alround and a new tail gate. Work carried out FOC (Mobilo life 30 year cover) by MB in April this year.

Must have cost thousands. :D

Hi,

Mine's a 1998 W210 E320 estate.

It had rust on the doors, look under your seals, I mean peel them back and have a good luck.
It had rust on the tailgate by the number plate lights.
It had rust on the cross member.

All sorted for free by MB here in Frankfurt. Since then it has nothing new appearing, even my stone chips are holding up nicely.

How old was the car when MB fixed the rust?

My car was probably 7 years old when the rust was dealt with. It is registered in Oct 1998 has has the Mobilo life(30) warranty.

I do read though that people in the UK have more trouble dealing with MB UK than I did over here.

Regards,

Not too bad really, look at at a nine year old fxxd or vxxxxxxxl and compare the condition of the car......

Having just swapped my 95 140K Vectra (after 6 years of ownership) for a 98 100K C240 I'd have to disagree - Vectra was totally rust free, the C240 has several little spiders under the paint and (had) a couple of bigger bits on the edges of the doors - wheel arches were fine - but the usual boot lid bits are just showing.

Spent a month looking around - at both Vectra's and C Classes - and the Vectra's always had miniminal (if any) rust, whereas the Merc's where never that good. Of course the Vectra's had other faults, a lot had been abused and were badly stone chipped and/or had far to many parking knocks.

Wife's car is a 95 Astra - again zero rust, but it's only done 75K (half by us in the past 3.5 years!)

As for the other brand you mentioned, I couldn't comment as I'd the only one of those you likely to find me near would be black with a 6ft wood panelled load space.

No Rust at all on 1998 W210

My 1998 210 doesn't have any rust at all - Not one bit.

Many similar aged 210's have rust around the boot lock, fuel flap, bottoms of the doors.

make sure you check the front springs holders, they have a habit of getting rusty on the 210 (search the forums here and you'll see photos of same)

also the cross member itself can be covered in rust, and you cant see it until you've removed the plastic cover hiding it,

check both, as both could prove disastrous to you if they fail while driving.

Rust

Hi, I've got a 1998 w210 E300td Estate and heard about the areas these cars normally rust in on this site, so far so good with mine - could it be anything to do with colour as I have seen many rusty silver w210's mines solid dark blue and is ok.

More Rust For The Survey!

I have a 2000 (X Reg) W210 E240 Avantgarde Estate.

I purchased the car in June 2007 from a private vendor. The car has a full MB service history and should be covered by Mobilo.

There is severe bubbling and rust showing through at the leading edges/corners of both front wings where meeting the headlamps. Also "spidering" on the bonnet, not looking-like stone chips. Furthermore, rusted areas around the rear wheel arches where the bodywork is "lipped" around the arches (was it Swan and Allen? "Underneath the Arches...." just showing my age!).

There are one or two smaller areas which I cannot remember at the moment as the car is at a garage waiting for a replacement engine to be fitted, following a "catastrophic engine failure"!

Yes, it's me again folks!

When I am back on the road in the next few days, I will visit my local MB service centre and pursue my Mobilo warranty regarding the bodywork issues. I have already discussed this with them on 17/08/2007 when I had a new MAF Sensor fitted; although the "appropriate-manager" to discuss the issue with, was unavailable due to being on holiday. We all deserve at least one in our lifetime!

From your "postings" to this survey, I note that a number of replies state that where there has not been a continual-chain of service history with MB; MB have (in some cases) "honoured" the Mobilo warranty and undertaken bodywork repairs at MB's cost.

I trust that this will also be the case with my situation, as I have sourced (from Dronsfield) and am having fitted a replacement engine (at my own expense), at a non-MB approved garage, very competent though they are.

Any thoughts (if appropriate to this "Rusty old Survey"), would be much appreciated.

If it has FMBSH, just don't mention the engine. They won't notice.
In any case, your car needs only have FMB "Service" history, and by all accounts it does have. They don't state that ALL work must be done by the dealer, just the service. So the new engine shouldn't affect it.
As to what they'll cover......
There are common failure points that are well discussed. Boot lock, under door seals and wheelarches they probably won't question as it's expected. Other areas are less common so they may look more closely. Still certainly worth a chat.

You responded to my post on Rusty Old Buckets - or thereabouts! Many thanks.

You also responded regarding my "aside" to "catastrophic engine failure".

Your advice is NOT to mention an engine change to MB when seeking re-dress on rust issues, they will not check?!

However, I AM concerned that any Mobilo Warranty is NOT invalidated by a fundamental change to the "original" vehicle, not MB undertaken.

Well, whoever said that owning a car was a "total joy"? Clearly there are (many) "downsides" and, hopefully a balance of "upsides"? Time will tell.

Many thank's for your response to my posting.
