Had a 2001 w203 best car I owned but rust on every corner. Gave it in for a full respray, looked awesome in brilliant silver but 2 years later it stared coming through again.
Once I sold the 203 I treated myself to a w219 it was on a 2006 and had small rust bubbles in the arches! Is any car safe from the dreaded stuff! At least it keeps Hammerite in business!

Yeah.... but there's rust and there's rust, 35 years ago I had a Morris Minor that had virtually no floors or inner wheel arches, thankfully that sort of rust is a thing of the past, now rust is really just a cosmetic nuisance, lets all keep some perspective, manufacturers have mainly sorted the rust problem, some more successfully than others, but rust is much less of a problem than it used to be.

2004 S203 C180K - no rust on it anywhere.

2006 W164 320CDI - just starting to see some coming to the fore on the inner lip of the rear arches - both sides.

1995 S124 220 - just about to go into the body shop for inner and outer wing, tailgate and nearside rear quarter panel (under cargo window) repairs. Rest of it seems solid except for a couple of the jacking points but I'm not sure what I'll do with these as I'm not likely to ever use them).

If that rust before it creeps to the outer panels, this means much respraying, this can be easily fixed before it gets expensive.

Malcolm, quickie for you- W211 estate, some rust starting to appear on the inside lip and return edge of the rear wheelarches. Not visible until you start looking up inside the arch. Is this easily fixable, and would I be wise to stoneguard the inside?

Many ways, its all in the DIY, plus I can show you in a couple of weeks, still a good time of the year to do it.

Thank you. I'm not getting the car until the end of the month (the gold one) and considering getting the seller to have it fixed as condition of sale, but that little warning bell started ringing- never trust anyone you don't know to do something to your car! The only other issue on that car (aside from some incredibly greasy leather!) is the stripped-off clear coat on the rear bumper, I'm guessing that removal, respray and replacement shouldn't be a difficult job. No colour coat needed there.

I've noticed as well one small (4 x 2mm) diamond-shaped bubble starting on the CL's hood metal, just to the side of the rad grille so I'll need to fix that up at some point too. Aside from that there are some markes to the CL's bumper, wheel arch and A pillar NS so any pointers you can give would be lovely, thank you. Or I can always pay you in cake ;)

Very hard to touch in on big surfaces as spray mix, angle of spray all come into play with metallic paint. A good enough job can be done in many cases.

Malcolm, this is you we're talking about here ;) you're like the Mr Scott of old MB paint repair! I've seen the wheelarch work you did on your SL, undetectable!

E220 W210 1999 Rust on every wheel arch - disgusting. Every mechanic or body worker I have spoken to have said that was the terrible model year. I have to junk it because it's too expensive to fix.

2004 CLK (W209) offside rear wheel arch repaired. I was informed the other side has also been repaired in the past.
