It monitors the rotation of the crank shaft & knows where top dead centre is so it can can fire spark plugs & inject fuel into the cylinders at the correct time. They tend to fail hot ie the car then stops ..... when it cools, the car will often then start as if nothing had happened.

Or one of the most overpriced parts it will be your misfortune to replace on your MB;

Bosch one £50 from ECP.... only $26 plus postage from FCP Euro in US....

I'm always reluctantly buy pattern crank shaft sensors ..... too many tales of woe & short lived sensors on the Vauxhall forum, & though a Roadster's CSS isn't the most difficult to fit, it's being stranded miles from home that's the PITA. ;)

there are often more than 2 or three makers and sensors bought by car makers en masse then at times a different supplier after that batch is finished , so as long as its a mainstream supplier you should be ok . i have a number of different makes with me and have at times used odd ball crank sensors with success ,tho often the plug can be different. i keep duetz connectors for that. but tnen i am 5k miles and a few weeks from any re supply. https://www.amazon.com/Deutsch-2-Pin-Connector-Housing-Terminals/dp/B0166WDCVO

The Cps function is to inform the Ecu that the crankshaft is in the right position relative to the other bits of the engine that involve timing. The clever little Ecu then checks the other bits, like the camshaft sensor, after which it allows the engine to start.

Once, years ago, the engine would start without a Cps - and without an Ecu, or a camshaft sensor, or a Maf or a Map or ... the list goes on.

Before that time it would even start without a starter motor or even a battery!

Life is so much simpler with progress, ennit?

Dizzy? I'm obviously nowhere near as old as you!
Used to enjoy 'mapping' them by altering the advance curve and playing with the spring rates.

I have four dizzy's. A wife and three daughters. Genuine dizzy blondes all.

its just another grand scheme for car makers, all of them. suppliers cutthroat competition reduces cost quality .we pay.

MB will probably screw their suppliers down on price so maybe a Bosch one (if they do manufacture them) will be better.
I had one fitted under Mobilo and the tech told me its one of the most common failures so he carries a selection.

Incidentally I'm sure I watched the Greg Wallace programme which featured the Heinz factory and they said they don't make for anyone else.

HL foods part of Premier Brands make HP Beans which for years were produced at their factory in Norfolk.

Heinz do make HP beans because they own HP. ;)

I'm a fitter at Heinz Wigan :)

Inside the factory ;). In effect, we don't make for anyone else ..... Heinz owns HP :rolleyes:
