When did white happen?

So it seems every other car is white now, and all the car adverts feature white cars and almost every person I know under 30 seems to have one.

When and how did it manage to move from the cheap lease/ex-plod colour that nobody wanted and become the must-have's colour of choice?

It was the same many years ago when silver was the in colour.
Brown seems to be making a come back too, though never for me.

when i was looking for my SLK, a dealer told me he struggles to sell slk`s because most are silver or black and nobody wanted silver or black cars, well i had a silver TT at the time and loved it but did struggle to sell it privately for the same reason, i have managed to find a Burgundy SLK which is quite rare and after i put a deposit on it, the dealer told me he had 13 calls on it because of its colour, and wished he had priced it higher, white is a fad!! like silver was once

i see an increasing amount of silver police vehicles around, so I'm wondering if silver is falling out of favour and white into favour because its less likely to look like a 'cop car'?

I had a white car (cant really include the van as it was almost certainly to be white) and swore never again. I know a few people who have silver cars and they also do nothing for me. to be honest, yes they may look shiny (comparatively) more of the time, but I think they just look BLAND.

Our A Class is white, have to say we both love it after having had a Tenorite Grey C Class for 6yrs it's made a nice change. I fell in love with white cars when I had my Fiat500 and still am

Ahh .... Fiats in white are perfect.

But larger cars ... no, no.
What a pain to keep clean. And white never shows that deep glossy shine.

I do have a house full of Apple products, although my iMac, iPod, iPad etc are all silver not white. My phone is white though, but it's not an iPhone

We specified white for the W213, we're not sure why, we've only had two other white cars previous and they were not bought new so colour wasn't really a deciding factor. Something subliminal probably but I find this stays white far longer than our last one, a dark blue SLK, stayed dark blue. One rain shower chicken-poxed it - doesn't show on white.

In hot climates like ours, white is definitely THE colour to have. Much cooler and far less prone to fade and oxidation. Easy to clean.

Not only cooler in hot climates but also easier to see on our country roads, where silver and darker cars tend to blend into the background.

A tad surprised by some of the opinions that the colour choice is actually a trend. Manufacturers, by marketing the colour 'trends' is all it is. They have to lead the market and make their products desirable, just as with your phone's, music centres and laptops etc, white today, silver tomorrow, black by the weekend. We are actually sheep and just keep up with the Jones's in a lot of ways
