I had two white cars over the years - just what was available at the time... In the old, old days, people who sat in the outside lane moved over - especially if you left your headlamps on  but the colour is a bu99er... it shows every little fleck of dirt. Years ago I had the best colour ever - a Triumph Sprint in Saffron yellow - SWMBO called it "birdcage yellow" heh heh. I could leave it for three weeks and it always seemed to look clean - AND it was very easy to spot it in a car park!

i see an increasing amount of silver police vehicles around, so I'm wondering if silver is falling out of favour and white into favour because its less likely to look like a 'cop car'?

I had a white car (cant really include the van as it was almost certainly to be white) and swore never again. I know a few people who have silver cars and they also do nothing for me. to be honest, yes they may look shiny (comparatively) more of the time, but I think they just look BLAND.
The police tend to buy silver now because it makes resale easier on the second hand market .

As the threads been revived and I'm having a lazy afternoon I thought I'd contribute. :)

A few years ago I had a white XF-R and swore then I'd never have another white one as:

1. It was a swine to keep clean.
2. It looked like a Stormtrooper

Fast forward and I've done exactly the same thing, albeit Diamond White, which is a pearlescent as opposed from plain which the Jaguar was in.

I can see a pattern emerging here. :)

Look good when they're clean though...

I had a white 2.8i Capri which I have fond recollections of, funnily enough I thought the car didn’t show road dirt too badly

I had a Triumph Dolly Sprint, I remember they only were only available in Mimosa yellow for the first year’s production (which I really liked) but ended up with Carmine red example when I eventually bought one in 1978, lovely colour but faded as most reds did in those days, interesting car but suffered from BL bodgery unfortunarely

I went through a spell of white cars in the early days of company car use. I was the highest mileage driver in the company so had them changed about every 11 months at 60K miles. I soon clicked that wearing a light blue short sleeved shirt with a thin dark tie soon got me up and down the country ;);) as others thought I was a copper.

I had an Astra GTE MkI in white c/w the airfix kit as my weekend car, often with a kayak on the roof. That was known as the flying astra :):)

Like most of the utility companies too, tells you all you need to know about white, unless you plan a wedding car hire business?

that may well be true, but it was enough to put me off white, and now silver cars. apart from that, I'm not a fan anyhow. for me black, (but shows dirt) or bright red (like Ford Race Red or the MB Fire opal red) look awesome. they would be my pick if I were in a position to buy new

I quite like silver and it looks "okay" on a Merc. Well, I did like it until I fairly quickly realised there are "millions" of them, which makes it look rather "common".... :alien: but I still think the marque has a "presence" in any colour.

I thought all Mercs came in either silver or black  It's very rare to see them in anything else. New A Class seem to be in other colours to attract a younger buyer/leaser

depending on the car, I don't think it has the presence it once did. I know quite a few people who mistake the current A class for an Astra, from angles which mean they cant see the badges.

when all the south Africans showed up - over there its white or nothing and they all got homesick

we'll have an explosion of crap pick up trucks soon, all jumping in front of you as you slow for some traffic lights - only for them to pull away at a 1/4 of the speed a normal driver goes and covering you in black sooty cancer
