Apparently,For a short time, between 1999 and 2002, the w163 M-Class was built built by Magna Steyr in Graz, Austria, for the European market, before all the production moved to the U.S. plant near Vance, Alabama.

Baumuster just means model/type in German - can't see anything in the Vin which identifies the factory...maybe someone in Mercedes can tell by the Vin number... secret code?

Although I thought W = Germany (D= Mercedes Benz) so surely means built in Germany ?or is that too simplistic ?

When I put my VIN in it does say Sindelfngen. Yours doesn't say where.

If anything at all in this it is the first 3 letters, all of the numbers are used for the data

WDC is Germany, Daimler Chrysler.
However....
Germany can denote the manufacturers head officce and doesn't necessarily reflect country of the plant (WMI code). Thats the 11th character. A used to be Sindelfingen but they were never made there. It seems A was re-used for Alabama (X is Graz in Austria). BCDE are all Sindelfingen, FGH are Bremen, J is Rastatt, M is Woking (UK), R is East London (SA), X is Graz (Austria)
The 10th character should represent teh year but it seems MB may have used this to denote LHD/RHD with 1 being LHD, 2 being RHD.


Decoding my r129 WDB1290672F says Germany Daimler-Benz, RHD, Bremen (which is correct).
For my 210 its WDB2102622B which decodes as Germany, Daimler-Benz, RHD, Sindelfingen (which is also correct).

IIRC a lot (if not all) 203s were built outside of Germany (possibly Spain I cant remember) was denoted by the vin beginning WDC instead of the WDB so I believe its highly likely that whilst it may not pinpoint the factory, it will pinpoint a country. the usual for the 'german' built cars (210, 202 etc) was a WDB in the first 3 characters of the vin.

2nd letter is D=Dailmler

3 letter is:
B=Benz
C=Chrysler
D=Daimler AG
E=Smart (I think)
