Hello Guys,

I've looked on the net and getting different answers. Which engine oil should I use on my car. Mercedes Brentford said it needs to meet 229.5 but how does that relate to whether it should be 10W40 or 5W40? He could not answer...

I know that 5W40 is fully synthetic and is better in cooler temperatures but the 10W40 is semi-synthetic & thicker, meaning it will grab better to engine internally, so I am a bit confused?

I am inching towards the Mobil 1-10W40 (mainly because its a 20 year old car and the thicker oil makes sense). But another bit of confusion, this oil grade meets 229.1 not 229.5 as recommended by Mercedes Brentford.

Can anyone please help in providing greater clarity....

Thank you in advance.

Check it out with Opie oils who are sponsors on here, they give excellent advice and decent prices.
There’s little difference in the ones you are comparing except the lower temperature limit which in the UK won’t matter too much

Thete is little difference for your engine between a 10W or 5W as it's only relevant while the oil is cold (first number is cold viscosity, 2nd is hot viscosity). Arguably the thinner oil could be said to be better as it reaches all the smaller galleries quicker.

I'm pretty sure the M119 can also use MB229.3 spec oils and there are several 10W-40 oils meet that specification. The only real thing to note is they are all fully synthetic.

10w40 MB229.3 is fine, if you are really fussy, check the data sheets and look for an oil with a ZDDP content of between 1000 and 1200 ppm.

Interesting 40 years ago we were all using 20W50 all year.
I was an army ski instructor in Bavaria for 4 months each year, yes I know it was a hard life! But we used 10w40 as a winter oil only.

All part of the drive to improve economy and reduce emissions. A thinner oil is easier to pump.

Whats in it at the moment?
not sure, the service book just has all the details of the "last" service without the grade of oil used, but having looked at previous service stamps it's a mixture of 5W40 and 10W40...hence not sure which one to go for...

The oil spec will be listed in the handbook, usually towards the back.
